It took me a matter of ten minutes from the time Kayla texted me about Adrian to get to the hospital. The nurses had ushered everyone out of the room so they could start training him to breath without the help of the tube and he could have some space.
I watched anxiously through the window, but I could barely see him through the swarm of doctors. After what seemed like hours, the nurses trickled out of the room. A doctor approached me. "He is officially out of the comatose state, but is asleep now. He seems to be breathing fine without the tube, but we must keep monitoring in case he stops or goes back into comatose. We don't know anything other than that at this moment."
I breathed a sigh of relief. "So, he's all right."
The doctor smiled. "As all right as one can be after what he's been through."
"Can we visit him?"
"Maybe in a few minutes. We need to see how he's doing for a little while."
My chest fell. "Okay."
I waited for another eternity before a nurse came out to tell us we could go in. I reached the door, then looked back at Kayla, who hadn't moved.
"Are you coming?" I asked.
"Go ahead," she said with a smile. "I'll follow in a minute."
I smiled slightly and opened the door. I slowly walked over to Adrian's bed. There were still nurses around it but they noticed me and all but one left. I sat by his bedside and took his hand.
I pressed my lips to his hand and held it to my forehead.
"Em . . . Emily?" His voice was hoarse from disuse, but I'd know that voice anywhere.
"Adrian?" I asked, lowering his hand and taking his cheek in one of my own.
He shifted. His eyes were closed. "I, I thought it was you." He smiled and seemed to force his eyes open. His smile spread. Then his brow furrowed. "What, what happened?"
"You don't remember?" I asked, concerned.
He frowned concentrating. "I remember talking to you about our date. Did we ever go on it?"
I frowned. "No, we didn't. You," I took a deep breath to compose myself for this. "You were hit by a car."
"I . . . I was?"
"Yeah." I told him the simplified version of the accident and his injuries. He looked confused.
"Wow. That really happened? How, how long have I been out?"
I took a deep breath. "Ten days."
His eyes widened, then closed as his face contorted in pain. "Ten days?" He exclaimed softly.
"Yes," I breathed.
He opened his eyes back up laboriously. "That means the band was supposed to go on tour . . ." He scrunched his brow, trying to remember.
"Nine days ago," I said, slightly concerned that he couldn't even remember when he was supposed to leave for the tour.
"Right," he shifted and breathed out roughly. "Everything hurts, Emily."
I sighed, and smiled sadly. "I know, Adrian."
Just then, Kayla came in. "Adrian!"
He smiled slightly. "Hi, Kayla."
"How are you feeling?"
"Hurt."
She chuckled. "I know the feeling." He smiled. "Emily was nearly going crazy waiting for you to wake up."
