[all events before the reaping already happened]
-katniss-
"prim, katniss, get out the door!" my mother yelled.
"okay, okay." i replied, grabbing prim and running outside.
"what if they pick me again?" prim asked, struggling to keep up with me.
"they won't." i replied.
"that's what you told me last year." she said.
"well, last year was just unfortunate."
our conversation ended as we saw effie on the stage. it was almost time.
victors were required to come to the reaping, i wasn't sure why.
effie tapped on the microphone and we all were silent. i ran over to where haymitch and peeta were and stood next to them.
"you are late, again." peeta said with a smile.
i shrugged.
"this year, from each district, four people will be in the arena." effie said into the microphone.
i looked at haymitch confused. didn't this already happen in the last quarter quell? he gave me the same look i gave him.
"they will be two victors, and two non-victors!" effie continued.
oh no.
"we will start with the victors!" effie said. "as always, ladies first."
she walked over to a bowl with only one slip of paper in it.
"katniss everdeen."
of course it was me. i'm the only girl victor.
i walked up to the stage, and effie gave me a sad look.
"and now, for the boys." she said and walked over to another bowl.
"haymitch abernathy."
haymitch started to walk up to the stage, until-
"i volunteer as tribute!" peeta yelled.
before anyone could stop him, he ran up to the stage.
"okay, let's do another boy!" effie was excited.
she walked over to another bowl with at least 3,000 slips in it. she pulled out one and read it out loud.
"gale hawthorne." she said with a smile.
how? i watched gale walk up and stand next to peeta. he gave me a worried look.
"and our last tribute..." effie said, pulling out another paper from the girls bowl.
"madge undersee!" she exclaimed.
i looked at madge. this can't be possible.
"i volunteer as tribute." said a quiet voice from the front.
"who said that?" effie asked.
a hand shot up. it was prim. she walked up to the stage, her whole body shaking.
"the rules will be like last year. four people can win, as long as they are from the same district. the same goes for three and two people. you may all shake hands." effie said.
we shook hands and peacekeepers lead us out and to the train. effie and haymitch followed.
"so, you ready to start?" haymitch asked.
"are you sick?" i said.
"no. why?" he replied.
"because last year all you cared about was the drinks." peeta said.
"this year i have four people to help. theres a lot of pressue." haymitch said.
i sat on the couch and looked out the window, and i eventually fell asleep.
