Setting: Inspired by @jynxcassian - this is a one-shot of the months before Hope's arrival(Jyn's pregnancy).
-
Jyn sat stiffly in the chair adjacent to Mon Mothma as she listened intently and twisted strands of hair around her finger repeatedly.
"Do you have any questions?" Mon Mothma asked worriedly, seeing Jyn's pale face.
"I-I just need time to think," Jyn replied.
"All the time you need, Jyn, but you don't have to do it alone."
Mon Mothma stood and walked out without another word after observing Jyn's blank stare. She was not the one who could console Jyn any further. She knew the only person for the job was the soon-to-be father of her child.
Mon Mothma's words echoed in Jyn's mind over and over again, trying to comprehend each piece she was told.
How long have you and Cassian been together again?
About a year.
Do you have a healthy relationship?
Yes... we love each other.
She hugged her legs close to her chest and repeated the conversation in her head, wincing at certain parts that left her feeling vulnerable.
She had been uninformed her whole life.
She was raised by soldiers. Her body was a weapon before all else, never a creator of life.
Jyn, you have all the symptoms of...
...Of what?
Of being pregnant.
Mon Mothma stood behind a screen of the control room, watching Cassian finish a conversation with an informer. She took a deep breathe before approaching him.
"Cassian, Jyn has requested to see you."
He gave her a quick nod. "We've just picked up a lead on attacks in Vjun, Jyn will understand."
She stood her ground and looked him sternly in the eye. "I'll take your place today, Cassian. Jyn needs you."
His eyes filled with confusion as he looked to Mon Mothma for more information.
"Go," she told him.
He walked out in a calmly matter, but leaped into a sprint towards their living quarters once outside of the control room.
"Jyn?!" he called out upon entering their quarters.
Jyn shot upwards at the unexpected visit. "In here," she said weakly.
He found her looking out the window at the dense jungle below. He knew something was off when she didn't meet his eyes. He sat down beside her and put an arm around her stiff shoulders.
"Whenever you're ready," he said to her.
They waited together until Jyn turned her head to face him. "I'm going to have a baby," she told him nervously. She thought it best get it over with.
His eyes grew wide and mouth agape. He saw her lips tugging into a relieved smile before he pulled her into a tight hug.
"You're happy," she said to herself. "So I should be happy."
He grabbed onto her shoulders and pulled them apart. "Jyn, you have every right to be worried."
Jyn accepted this, but the shock was still too great.
"I'm scared," she said, letting the shameful words slide off her tongue.
"Everything's going to change, Jyn, but I'll be here, I promise."
"But will we always be here for this... child?" she asked him.
Cassian quickly put the pieces together in his mind and searched for the right words. "Your parents?"
She gave him a sullen nod. The fear of having her child be deprived of a peaceful life as she had been was too much for her to bear.
Cassian sympathized with Jyn on this point. He had lost his childhood at the age of six when his world was torn to pieces by the Empire. No child deserved to live the life he and Jyn were forced into. The dark deeds he had done in the name of the Rebellion would never leave him, and the darkness that resided within Jyn from her experiences were forever a part of her.
"We'll enjoy every moment of it, won't we?" he said, ignoring the negative thoughts.
She nodded once more.
"Even if there are moments taken away from us, we'll never stop fighting for them. If we let the possibility of destruction keep us from living, Jyn, then what's the point of living at all?"
She looked up at him with teary eyes before pressing her lips to his. Cassian knew it would take weeks, even months, for her settle with the idea.
The months passed, and the new parents grew more and more eager to meet their child. Jyn's discouragement dwindled as she received support from Bodhi, Chirrut, and Baze.
It was hard to label Kay's actions as supportive when he would worry Jyn with statistics and facts on pregnancy and birth. They would lie together at night when Jyn was restless and talk about the insecurities Kay had aroused within her that day. Cassian took the time each night to calm her nerves and give her massages.
As her delivery date approached, their lives as Rebels came to a halt when the duty of parenting became more crucial.
Cassian would rub Jyn's back in the first weeks when morning sickness hit her in the early hours of the day.
"It will pass, Jyn," he would tell her. "I'm with you all the way."
