Setting: Little bit before and little bit after the elevator scene on Scarif.
-
They stumbled into the elevator, embracing the first moment of the battle that allowed them breathe easy. They felt uncertainty for what would become of them, a feeling they had adjusted to since the mission commenced.
The transmission was sent. Jyn stared at the man who had tried to assassinate her own father, yet he did not.
Krennic was prepared to take her life with the press of a trigger. The chances of her dying from the man who had ripped her family apart... well, only K-2 would know those numbers. Cassian had saved her life, allowing her to be taking such relieved breathes.
She was prepared to see the bodies of her comrades sprawled out on the beach when the elevator doors opened. The solider within her pushed the thought of such losses away.
The ever-changing light played no part in distracting her eyes away from Cassian's face. Chills spread like fire through her worn down body. She had forgotten what dependency on another felt like. She barely remembered the people who she'd hatched escaped plans and smuggled with, for they came and went in a blink of an eye.
Cassian never left her, despite the challenges she brought to him. During their fight after Eadu, she saw it plastered on his face how much he wished her wiped from the galaxy.
Perhaps she was just a part of the mission to him. Now that this mission was over, would he leave her in the dust for the next one and continue to fight for the rebellion? Before, Jyn had only wished to be free and out of the surveillance of the Rebellion. Now she wasn't sure if she wanted to stop fighting alongside Cassian.
She wanted the planet killer gone.
She replayed the incident just moments ago with Krennic. She recalled her surge of fear when she heard the sound of a blaster go off. If she were to die, who would send the transmission?
Seeing Cassian appear from behind Krennic's body as it fell restored her hope, and with that newfound hope, she sent the transmission up to the Rebel fleet.
Then she remembered the damaging fall Cassian had taken moments before, yet he managed to find his way to her.
Cassian looked at Jyn with just as much intensity, if not more. Jyn was a mystery to him, and he promised himself to spend the rest of his days trying to figure out who she was. She was more than an informant that could be easily swept aside.
He made it his own mission to never leave her behind as he had once been tempted to do. It took him only moments to realize how close they were. He was determined to make a new life for her, a brilliant beginning in the Rebellion.
He only wished the pain from his abdomen would cease so that he could focus on the words he would use to tell her of his plans. For once, they were not consumed by fighting or running for their lives. They stood in silence, infused with exhaustion, pain, and some emotion that was foreign to both.
A violent pulse put both of them onto their knees when the ray of the planet killer hit the top of the base. Cassian grabbed Jyn's shoulder for support. The elevator continued to run, but pieces of debris began to bang on the metal roof overhead.
They recognized the burst of energy that had befallen Scarif; it was the same exertion used on Jedha.
The floor vibrated with intensity beneath them.
Something horrible was approaching. Cassian took one glance at Jyn to see her eyes grow wider with the realization. Her mouth was open, but she could not speak her mind that became overwhelmed by this new turn of events.
Cassian quickly let go of his hopes for the future, for there was no future. He pressed his spare hand to the side of her cheek and locked lips with Jyn. Never before had he shown or felt such passion. It was not the way of a Rebel intelligence officer, it was the way of Cassian Andor when he knew it was his only chance to show Jyn what their future may have held.
Jyn gripped onto Cassian's collar as she embraced this side of her that had never been put into the light before. She was glad she had found the light before the fire consumed her every thought and emotion.
An alarm signaling that they had arrived at the ground floor rang and fractured their attachment. The doors opened to see an empty hall ahead. Jyn hoisted Cassian to his feet, and they made for the exit of the building, keeping their eyes and ears alert for any threats.
A storm trooper came running their way. Cassian took hold of his blaster but went no further when he saw the trooper turn the corner.
The trooper was not equip with his customary white helmet. Instead, he wore a pale face filled with terror. Cassian allowed him to pass and looked at Jyn with disheartened eyes.
"Impending death has always been a way to bring peace between two enemies," he sighed. He was right. With the sight of death advancing, the Battle of Scarif was put to an end. Surviving troopers and rebels alike were brought to their knees by the weapon.
They approached the thick, metal doors that stoodajar from all the pursuing chaos. They stepped outside and looked to the sky, seeing its wild destruction devour the planet. Jyn noticed Cassian grow weaker from his wounds, she adjusted his arm over her shoulders and headed towards a nearby beach.
