Chapter Twenty: Close To Death

~~ Death's Point Of View~~

He left the room and my stomach sunk. The thought of him and my father together was enough to send my anger into overdrive.
"He will be fine" Lucifer said pushing his desk back to its original place as if it wasn't a big deal.
"You are to calm about this" I snapped
"He's with Camael, he will be fine"
I forgot Camael was watching him while Lucifer was here. At least if something happened Camael had years of training to protect him, even I've fought with Camael.
"You had to crack my wall?" Lucifer complained putting his hand inside the gap "do you have any idea how hard it is to get this material? You have to get one that won't melt in the heat"
"Yeah but your done it once before you can do it again"
"Actually you have done it eight other times"
"oh bullshit" I snapped
"no your right, its twelve"
I flipped him the bird and sat down on his couch pulling out my phone and flicking around on Facebook.
"Really old man?" I said showing him a recent status he put up "work is suddenly stressful? You poor thing how do you survive, it's not like you have a bunch of asshole who want you dead"
"actually I do. Why do you think I'm down here?"
"Good point" I said flicking back to my phone and looking at some video

"It's been ages" I said now pacing the room
"Sit down, you have been walking in circles for at least forty minutes. I'm getting dizzy"
"I'm going to go see him" I said
"no you're not he's fine"
"He hasn't told us anything I can't read his mind cause of that room"
"what about it?"
"It has a block on it or something, I can read when I'm inside it it's just being outside and try to read someone on the inside"
"I was wondering why you were so quiet and not commenting on his shit"
"I would have been in there two hours ago if that was the case" I snapped
"Just sit down he will be fine"
I forced myself to sit down not being happy about it.
"See" he said "was that so-"
A scream echoed the halls, a scream that turned my blood cold. I was gone out the door without a word, I could hear Lucifer calling my name behind me but I was gone, I ran as fast as I could to where my father was.

I stood at the door in shock; it took until Lucifer turned up for me to register it actually happened.
"Ashton" he said rushing to his side
I continued to stand there unable to move, all I could do was stare
"Death" Lucifer snapped "Help me get him to the medical room"
"He's dying" I said "I can feel it, we can't move him it will speed it up"
"Fine, call Ajax" he said but I was out of it the only thing I could focus on was the feeling of his life slipping through me again, only this time he was more than a random guy in a fight.
"Death" Lucifer snapped again "Death, Oh for fuck sakes"
Lucifer pulled out his phone and began to punch in some numbers.
"Fuck no reception, Death get here now. Keep pressure on his wound"
I walked over, my body was on autopilot I looked over his body. It was limp, dead, just lifeless. His face was blank and held no expression.
I snapped back to reality.
"Like fuck you are leaving this place again" I said applying more pressure onto his wound "You're not leaving me, I'm too stubborn to let you go... I can't" I said biting onto my bottom lip.
Purple mist filled the room followed by Ajax, Lacy and lily. Ajax was beside in a second assessing everything. Lily was as well, Lacy stood beside Lucifer tears in her eyes.
"Death is out of it" Lucifer said "She's on autopilot wont react to anything"
Ajax just nodded to Lucifer and replaced my hands with his.
"Lacy" he said pushing me to the side "Watch her, make sure she doesn't do anything to drastic, Lilly, on my count remove the sword from his body slowly and steadily"
"Okay" she said gently placing her hands on the handle of the sword.
"Three... Two... One... Now"
She gently pulled the sword out not doing any more damage.
"It's an angel instrument" she said holding it there while Ajax mutters a spell.
"It's Camel's" Lucifer said which caused me to look away from Ashton and to the sword.
Lacy had disappeared from beside me
"Was he in this one?" she asked Lucifer as he analysed the sword.
"Yeah why's that?"
"Because the key is in it. He didn't break his way out, they key was given to him"
I stood up anger flooding through my body. "I'm going to kill that son of a bitch"
"Death" Lucifer said beside me suddenly "you don't know the story it could be a misconception"
"then where is he? Where is Camael? I don't see him on the ground, close to death"
Lucifer fell silent looking at the sword in his hand.
"that's what I thought" I snapped
"Death, Lucifer" Ajax said after he finished a spell "We need to move him, I need to be at home to work properly, I've stabilized him so he can move but I need to be home with my stuff to save him.
"I'll teleport him" Lucifer said steeping closer
"No, I need Death too"
"Why?"
"She teleports smoother than either of us, she's done it plenty of times before"
"I'll do it" i said quickly

"Your pacing again" Lucifer said as I walked backwards and forwards down the length of the library.
"I honestly don't care" I snapped "What is going on, it's been ages"
"Ajax knows what he's doing just give it time, he's done it before remember"
My hand instantly hovered over my scar.

As if on cue Ajax, Lilly and Lacy all walked out. Ajax looked tired as well as Lilly.
"The rest is up to him" Ajax said "I've done all that I can, it's his choice to wake up or not"
"Can I go see him?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"Sure he's i-"
I was gone before he could answer, I knew where he was, he was in the torture chamber where Ajax does all his Angel saving.
I stood at the shut door worried about what lay on the other side, would it still be my Ashton?

I opened the door and found him tied down by the angel rune cuffs. A table lay beside the bed with plenty of bloody soaked bandages, and herbs. There was a massive jar full of holy water and package full of blood. Demon blood almost although this one was sweeter. Then it clicked, it was Lucifer's blood. The same stuff running through me was running through his veins. I didn't think about the amount of blood he would have lost and how he would replace it. Everything that happened to me was happening to him and it's my fault.
I walked over to the side of the bed pushing the table to the other side of the room; I didn't want it near me. He lay there, he wasn't breathing, he didn't have to anyway. His face was blank I would have given anything to see that smart ass smile and beautiful teeth. To see his eyes open and sparkle the way they would when he threw an insult at you. Just any sign of life would be amazing.

A few days had passed and he still hadn't gotten up, I hadn't left the room and didn't plan to anytime soon. Lacy brought a chair down to me and brought food and drinks but I didn't touch the food, I watched over him, Ajax would come down and change his bandage each time it looking the exact same as it did the last time. He always gave he a soft smile and kept saying that at least it wasn't infected. But I didn't reply, I looked at Ashton as if it was the last time I would ever see him again.

I sat there now watching him as he lay there lifeless as Lucifer walked in.
"you know" he softly said walking over and standing beside me "He did the exact same thing when you were out to it, he wouldn't leave your side, I told him to come and train but he always refused, said he wouldn't leave your side I forced him in the end but as soon as we were done he was straight back to you"
"It's my fault this is happening" I said not taking my eyes off Ashton "it's my fault he's a hybrid angel like me. I should have gone with him, I knew something would happen but he seemed so confident in going. If I went with him none of this would have happened. I wouldn't be feeling so... so"
"Guilty" Lucifer finished for me.
"Yeah" I said softly
"it's not the only thing you are feeling though is it?"
I ignored him
"is it?" he pushed
"fine okay no I feel like shit, I'm worried, I'm scared, I'm angry I'm..."
"Realising you love him"
"No, it's my fault he's even here"
"You didn't force him to be a grim reaper"
"I pretty much did. I killed his father, tortured his mother into killing herself, scared the living daylights out of him, he was tortured with those siblings... he lived his life looking for me when I left him by himself"
"you protected him"
"I did not" I snapped "I did the opposite. I didn't give a flying fuck back then if he stayed alive or not he was just another kid who was just as annoying as the others"
"Then why take his memories from him? Why did you watch him for months after that? Checked up on him a couple times a year."
"Because I owe it to him. I ruined his life. I still am to this day. Cupid may have said we are soul mates but I do nothing but hurt him constantly He's always close to death."
"Well" a rough voice said beside me "I would say I'm pretty close to Death right now, you are like a few inches away"
"Ashton, welcome back" Lucifer said "I'll notify Ajax"
I was frozen again, just like I was when he was near dead. I sat there and looked at him, that stupid smile on his face, his eyes sparling from the pun he had just pulled.
I slapped him.
"Don't you ever, ever do that to me again"
He gave a smile "I was nearly dead and that's the greeting I get"
"I wasn't finished" I said moving in closer to him, my lips crashed onto his and he was quick to react.
"I can come back later" a voice said as I broke away quickly turning around to see Ajax standing there. I flushed red and stood back.
Ajax checked a couple of things and then undone his restraints. He sat up slowly in a bit of pain but brushed it off like nothing.
"How do you feel?" Ajax asked once he was on his feet fully
"I'm so hungry" he replied looking at me
"what are you looking at me for?" I snapped annoyed at him
"You haven't eaten either, I can tell cause you are getting shitty real easy, can we go eat, I could do with some pizza"
"I'm driving" I said as I began to walk out of the room.
