It all started in 1918, that was the year I was born. Course you would have heard about the war if you were around. We're trying to fight it. Trying to survive. Depression was not in our favor. I went to sign up for being a nurse. My mother was a nurse and my father died in combat. Took me years to get over it but I was living on my own.
'You have skills. Skills they will need. You'll be a top nurse on the one-o-seventh US Army Nursing Corps. They're leave is for tomorrow for England' Said one of the highly trained nurses.
Not only was I a nurse, I was going to be the top nurse. Steve invited me to the Cinema saying he needed to get some air.
"So they turned you down again?" I asked smoothing out the wrinkles in my skirt as we enter the Cinema.
"Yeah, that's the fourth time now." Steve sighs. I knew they were never going to draft him. Don't get me wrong Steve is a sweet guy. Its just the army looks for physical strength and appearance.
"Well I'm glad you invited me to see a movie. We all need a break and time to relax." I beamed a smile at him as we walk into the theater.
"I'm happy you came." He said back as we take a seat in the middle section. A commercial about the war is playing before the movie.
"Who cares? Play the movie already." Some loud jerk was sitting a couple rows in front of us spoke. I rolled my eyes.
"Hey, buddy, you wanna show some respect?" Steve says quietly.
"I'm gonna get some popcorn. I'll be right back. Don't say anything else to the loud mouth." I whispered to Steve as he nods his head.
I get up from my seat and head to the lobby area. I bought a medium size bag that would feed both Steve and I. As I was walking back to my seat I noticed Steve wasn't there. The loud mouth wasn't in his seat either. Out of the corner of my eyes I could see Steve getting dragged out of the movie theater out an exit door. I dropped the popcorn on the ground and ran after them. I exit the door and see Steve getting punched. He never listens.
"You just don't know when to give up, do you?" The loud mouth tells Steve. Steve looks over to me as I was getting ready to step in Steve pushes me behind him.
"I can do this all day." He tells him as he leaps toward him the guy throws a punch at Steve knocking him to the ground.
"Leave him alone." I yell at the guy as he takes a step forward to Steve.
"You want some of this bitch?" The guy asked as my cheeks flare pink. How dare he? He gets ready to raise his fist abive me. I flinched for just a second before we were interupted.
"Hey! Pick on someone your own size." A familiar voice shouts.
"Bucky." I smiled lightly. He does have good timing during these situations. He pulls the guy away from us. The guy goes to punch Bucky but Buck punches him then kicks him away.
"Hey, come on." I help Steve up. Bucky walks over to us.
"Sometimes, I think you like getting punched." Bucky says as he picks up some papers.
"I had him on the ropes." Steve says wiping the blood off of his nose. I hand him a tissue.
"How many times is this?" Bucky asked looking over the papers. Must be Steve's enlistment form.
"Oh, you're from Paramus now? You know it's illegal to lie on the enlistment form. And seriously, Jersey?" Bucky asked. I stiffen my laugh. Steve has tried everything in order to get into the army.
"Did you get your orders?" Steve asked as he looks at Bucky. Oh, he's in his suit.
"The one-o-seventh. Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow." Bucky says proudly.
"One-o-seventh?" I look at Bucky wide eyes.
"Yeah, why? Is your jerk of a boyfriend going too?" He asked looking at me. I roll my eyes. Bucky never liked Frank, my boyfriend. He was a guy my mother picked out for me before she died. Said he was a family friend and that it was meant to be.
"No, but I am. You are looking at your head nurse for the one-o-seventh." I wink at him as he chuckles.
"Can't believe you really are a nurse for my unit." He smiles.
"I should be going." Steve mutters as I wrap an arm around his shoulder.
"Come on, man! It's Willow's and my last night. Gotta get you cleaned up. You look good in that Willow." My cheeks flush pink as Bucky says that. I was terrible at taking compliments. Bucky wraps an arm around Steve and I as we walk out of the alley way.
"Why? Where are we going?" Steve asked.
"The future." Bucky says as he hands Steve the newspaper. Steve opens as I look at it. An ad for World Exposition.
