The group of initiates walked silently down a long tunnel, but in a tense silence. Not like the comfortable one in the stairway. Then they stopped in front of a doorway.
"This is where we divide," The woman who introduced herself as Lauren said, her arms folded. "The Dauntless-borns are with me, since I assume they don't need a tour of the compound?" She smiled and beckoned towards the group of Dauntless-borns. They turned and dissolved into the shadows.
The man next to her glanced around at the rest of initiates as Lauren lead the Dauntless-born away.
"Most of the time, I work in the control room, but for the next few weeks I am your instructor. My name is Four." Annabeth noticed his overly calm demeanor, yet the tension in his muscles. He wasn't someone to cross.
"Four?" Christina asked. "Like... the number?"
"Yes," Four replied evenly. "Is there a problem?
"Nope."
"Good. We're about to go into the Pit, which you will someday learn to love. It—"
"The Pit? Clever name." Christina snickered.
Four slowly walked up to Christina, a leopard hunting it's prey. "What's your name?"
"Christina," she almost squeaked.
"Well, Christina, if I wanted to put up with Candor smart mouths, I would've joined their faction. The first thing you will learn here is to keep your mouth shut. Got it?" His voice was barely a hiss.
Christina nodded. Then as soon as Four moved away—"Shat a jerk."
"Most people don't like to be laughed at," Beatrice— or, as Dauntless now knew her as, Tris said.
They walked on until they entered what Four called the Pit. Nico took one look inside, and his stomach recoiled. He would much prefer the dark tunnels to the high ledges with only a strip of rock connecting them. The entire place was a very non-friendly environment for people who weren't allowed to be too high. And for Thalia. At least it's underground, he thought with some contentment.
"Follow me," Four commands. "I'll show you the Chasm." Thalia backed away gratefully from the edge.
The Chasm, Nico thought bitterly. How lovely.
Percy was mirroring his thoughts. Then they heard water. Roaring water, the sound of a storm throwing everything it had wildly against the rocks. He relaxed.
The side dropped off into a steep cliff, ending into the river below. Four faced them, away from the edge.
"This reminds us that there is a brave line between bravery and idiocy!" He shouted over the rushing water. "A daredevil jump off this will end your life. You have been warned."
"This is incredible," Annabeth said. She was grinning.
Next to her, Tris and Reyna nodded. Reyna studied the Pit once more, internally comparing it to Camp Jupiter and New Rome. And even Camp Half Blood. The camps were much cleaner and less insane than this place. It was like a very non hygienic military camp. But they all had the same general concept—train for your life.
They were lead to a gaping hole in the wall, past the Pit to what was evidently the dining room. As soon as they entered, the Dauntless all stood up. They clapped. They cheered. They made as much noise as possible.
Thalia smiled. There was almost something calming about the Dauntless chaos.
Reyna sat next to Four, Tris, and Christina, and the other demigods sat across.
