"Up and at 'em," Reyna said, poking Nico awake. He groaned and glared at her through sleepy eyes, but she rolled her own eyes and poked him again.
"Your glares don't scare me, Nico," she chastised. "Come on. We're going on the train."
"Why?" Christina mumbled from her bed where she was trying to change while staying in the warmth of her bed.
"Did you forget?" Annabeth asked as she zipped up her jacket. "We're going to the tracks and the border. Learn about our jobs when we pass initiation."
"If we pass initiation," Reyna muttered, but Annabeth shook her head.
"No, we'll all pass."
"But it's not all hand to hand combat," Reyna reminded her. "We still have to face our fears. That's stage three."
Annabeth, Percy, and Nico all locked eyes, if only for a moment, but the gesture did not go unnoticed by Tris, who was just waking up with a painful groan.
"What'rewedoinf," she asked thickly.
"Train tracks," Christina reminded her. She turned to the demigods. "We should get breakfast while we can. I'll get some for Tris and we'll meet up with you there?"
"Suits me," Percy said with a yawn. "I hope they have blue food."
"You and your blue food," Thalia chided as they walked towards the cafeteria.
++++
The train arrived with a rush of blaring horns. Reyna looked around, but she still didn't see Tris and Christina anywhere.
"You think Tris is really that hurt?" She half whispered half shouted to Nico. He shrugged, then pointed. "There they are!"
Tris's face was obviously strained with effort as she hurried as fast as she could over to where they were waiting.
"What took you so long?" Will shouted over another large blast of the train horn. Percy didn't wait for Christna's answer as he leapt into the train, grabbing the railing and pulling himself inside. The wind whistled past dangerously, making the train rock. Or maybe that was just Percy, who was backing away from the edge.
"What do you think is out there?" Tris asked suddenly after a few minutes of silence. "Beyond the fence, I mean."
Christina wiggled her eyebrows. "Monsters!"
Tris rolled her eyes. "Be serious"
The demigods exchanged glances. "She might be serious," Reyna said.
Now it was Christina's turn to roll her eyes. "Take a joke, Rey," she punched Reyna's arm. "Why d'you gotta be so serious?"
Reyna gave her an overly exaggerated smile. "I love everyone and cupcakes are happy and unicorns and rainbows and let's go ditch Dauntless initiation and buy chocolate for everyone. And don't call me Rey," she warned.
"See, there you go again," Christina said, exasperated. "Making everything serious. Seriously, has anyone mentioned how much you suck the fun out of everything?"
Nico raised his hand. Then suddenly, the train lurched as it slowed to a squealing stop.
"I thought the train never stopped," Annabeth said when she regained her footing.
"Apparently it does," Will said as he hopped down. He offered Christina his hand as she got down, who raised an eyebrow and slid off easily.
Four led the group to the fence, where he stopped with his arms crossed. "If you don't rank in the top five at the end of initiation you'll probably end up here. Once you are a fence guard, there is some potential for advancement, but not much. You may be able to go on patrols beyond Amity's farms, but--"
"Patrols for what purpose?" Will asked.
Four shrugged. "I suppose you'll discover that if you find yourself among them. As I was saying. For the most part, those who guard the fence when they are young usually continue to guard the fence. If it comforts you, some of them insist it's not as bad as it seems."
"What rank were you?" Peter asked Four. Percy caught a slight hitch in his tone, as if he were looking down on him. But Four looked Peter levelly in the eye, and said, "I was first."
"And you chose this?" Peter's eyes were wide and innocent. "Why didn't you get a government job?"
"I didn't want one," Four said flatly. And that was the end of that discussion. He went on about the jobs Dauntless could get, which were pretty limited.
"The options are mainly either guarding the fence or working security of the city. We can work in the Dauntless compound drawing tattoos, making weapons, or even fighting for entertainment."
"Is that it?" Percy asked. He glanced around as if looking for a sign with a list of possible jobs. "You mean... surfing isn't an option?"
Four sent Percy a suffering look and continued.
Nico glanced around as Four droned on about the jobs, taking notice of a shape in the distance. It steadily grew larger until it dwarfed the guards, and Nico realized it was a truck. Filled with crates and a few Amity residents.
Four paused as the doors creaked open, turning everyone's attention to the truck coming in. Reyna was paying more attention to the crates, trying to figure out what was in it, when a voice called out.
"Beatrice?"
Reyna glanced up from a crate with what was labeled pelpAs. Apples, she figured.
The Amity boy that spoke out stood up and hopped down. Annabeth recognized him from Abnegation and searched for a name. Robert. Her stomach twisted just a bit. She'd seen the newspapers about Abnegation, and if there were more transfers away, then it was dying out. And there was nothing she could do about it but watch the faction crumble.
That one was short but the next one is capture the flag so I'm hoping to get that longer.
