{19} "Because I'm Human"

"Oi, Lu~chan!"

I turn around. "Oh, hey Levy!"

She catches up to me. "You haven't talked to me since when Cana and you and I talked last week. What's up?"

"Oh, I'm not really sure." I'm hit with a sudden pang of guilt. "I guess I've been neglecting homework lately and I was so caught up in catching up that I didn't talk to anyone one. Gomen." (Sorry.)

"It's fine. I know how much your education matters to you and your family." We walk for a little back to the dorm buildings. "Hey, what do you say we go to the park later and catch up a little. Y'know, gossip maybe?"

I chuckle and push back my blonde hair. "Sure. When should we meet?"

"Hmm... Sunset."

"Sunset? So late?" I open the dorm building doors.

"Yeah, sunset. It's a calming time." She walks inside. "Usual spot?"

"You mean that one bench on top of that one hill?"

"That's the one," she assures. "Sunsets are pretty up there. You can see everything."

"Okay." I reach my dorm. "See ya then, Levy-chan!"

"Bye!" she waves off, continuing to walk down the hall.

I open the door of my room and throw my backpack on the ground. Sunset huh? I sit down at my desk and start my homework.

"Hey," Natsu greets as he walks into the room.

"Hey," I greet, looking up from my work for a split second. "You're late today."

"Yeah, I um... Had detention."

I sigh. "What did you do this time?"

"I was late to my classes, accidentally cussed out a teacher, and sorta kinda accidentally slapped Lisanna.." He nervously scratches his arm.

"You what?!? Why?!" I stand up from my desk, shocked.

"She was trying to get in my pants and it was starting to get really annoying," he explains. "Its not like I slapped her hard. Just enough to leave a hand mark for a few days."

"A few days?!" I run my hand through my hair, frustrated. "Look, I get you didn't appreciate her actions but hitting someone isn't the right way to approach it."

"Right," he says, "sorry."

"But she probably deserved it anyways." I grin at him and he shows that signature smile of his.

It was almost sunset. I still had some work to do and catch up on and even read ahead but I promised Levy that I'd be there. I slip on my jacket and open the door.

"Where are you going?" Natsu asks, lying on his stomach on his bed.

"To the park," I reply. "Gotta go, I'm already late."

"See ya."

I close the door behind me and quickly walk to the park.

It was nice out. Not too hot and not too cold. I made it to the designated meeting place a few minutes late, but Levy wasn't there. I take out my phone and call her. No answer.

I try texting her but she leaves me unread. If she isn't here in the next five minutes, I'm going to walk back to the dorms.

Five minutes eventually passed. "That's it, I'm leaving." I stand up from the bench, wiping any dirt off my pants that might have caught on.

"Wait," a voice says. Natsu. You look up at the salmon haired boy. "Levy couldn't make it. She sent me here to keep you company."

"Why that little..." You take a deep breath and sit back down. He joins you.

"Do you always come up here?" he asks.

"When I'm stressed or just want to relax," I reply. "It's really nice here during this time."

He awkwardly nods, his eyes on me the entire time. I look over at him briefly, only to be caught in his gaze.

"I um.." I trail off, not wanting to make things more awkward than it already was.

"Luce.." he says, his voice dangerously low.

"Y-yes?" I stutter. I swallow the lump in my throat.

"I think I like you." With that he presses his lips onto mine. I immediately push him way.

"No, I can't do this," I say, standing up.

"Why not?" he asks, following your actions.

"Because you're a player. A fúckboy. How do I know you're trying to play with me? How do I know you're not doing this just to get in my pants?"

"Because I'm human." I pause at his words. "I'm human alright? Humans can change. Just because I have this name, this title, going around the campus, doesn't mean I don't have a heart. It doesn't mean I can't change! I'm human after all. It's only natural for us to evolve over time."

I lick my dry lips. "I'll see you in the dorm." I didn't want to confront him. I walked away as fast as I could. He was yelling my name and begging for me to come back.

I couldn't do it. I couldn't face him.
