"Oh, it's Keona! Shut your mouth, Tatiana, and just be nice," Mila told me off, reaching for the knob at the front door. Rolling my eyes, I crossed my arms and waited patiently as Keona and Ruby Kraus stepped inside, both smiling happily.
"It's peen avile Mila. Ach! Are you combeting zis zeazon? Vo's your little friend-?" As Keona turned her head and spotted me, her eyes slitted. "Oh, little Havaiian girl, ve meet akain. Sday out of mein vay at the Grand Prix Final....Zo, Mila, dear, vat'fe you kot planned for tonight?"
"Yes it has, Keona. I have food at the table. Ruby can sign with Tatiana for awhile if she wants," Mila grabbed Keona's arm and dragged her away, leaving me with Ruby. The young redhead girl started to sign some things, that I just barely picked up. She had told me her name, so I signed back, saying the things out loud.
"My name is...Tatiana," I grunted, trying to sign out all the letters in my particularly long name. "I saw you on TV early this morning. At six o'clock." Trying to sign as fast as Ruby, I told her how exciting it was to meet her. Her face lit up after that. 'I've heard of you, too, Tatiana Anastasiya Darby! You were my idol as a small child! I hope you compete with my sister this season!' Ruby replied, smiling up at me.
"Really?! Wow! I didn't think I was anyone's idol after failing in my senior debut in the Grand Prix Final!" Signing quickly, I made surprised expressions to get across to Ruby that I was surprised and excited.
"Who's this, Tatiana?" Viktor poked his head over my shoulder from behind me, causing me to flinch, and Ruby to laugh loudly. "Ah, you must be Ruby Kraus," Holding out his hand for Ruby to shake, I realized Ruby could lip read, because she smiled up at Viktor and nodded, before starting to sign.
"She said you're also one of her idols, and wishes dearly to be like you and win gold four times," I said to him, making sure I had caught everything that Ruby had signed.
"Tell her that she's a wonderful girl," Viktor whispered to me from the side of his mouth, giving Ruby one of his signature fake smiles.
"Alright," I signed to Ruby, then signing 'come with me and Viktor.' "Let's go get her something to eat, while I go escape." I turned away from Ruby so she couldn't lip read, feeling slightly guilty that I had taken advantage of her disability.
"Hmm?" Viktor pretended he hadn't noticed, and decided to turn away from me to walk into Mila's spotless kitchen, which I had cleaned the day prior. It was getting pretty late, since I had done a competition throughout the night before.
"Just take her with you," I pushed the two ahead, waving politely to Ruby before turning on my heel to walk towards the front door. "Whew, I need to go talk with someone who has their head on right." So I left Mila's house out into the rain, booking it to Yuri's house down the block.
