Chapter 6
"Are you going to just stare at me all day?" She asked irritably as they sat on the couch facing each other. They have finally left the suite and went down to his office to talk. Yuri was contented to know mommy will just be in daddy's office and will come back during lunch.
"Oh, by the way, here's your iPhone," she said, putting it at the center table and pushed it towards him. "How did you manage to put that in my purse, anyway?"
Amazing how she can be so sweet to Yuri and a complete spitfire with him. He chuckled at himself. He had James dug all the information about her beyond what's stated in her resume. She had an older brother who died along with her parents due to a car accident. It was something they have in common, losing the people they loved through car accident. She was barely 18 years old then. She sold all their properties and bought the condominium unit where she's staying until now. She had scholarships all through college and had to work 2 jobs.
She was offered a position in the law firm she apprenticed in, yet refused the lucrative package and went into the corporate world. Hmmm, that's the interesting part. Why study law just to turn your back on the profession all together? She left her last employment just 3 weeks ago. She went into vacation for a week with a girlfriend, came back and immediately applied for another employment.
How lucky can he get that he met her before she was employed by the other companies she applied for? Although, James' brilliant mind helped tremendously. She won't be hearing anything from those companies anymore. And he is now busy making the necessary arrangements so she can go with them when they leave for Greece day after tomorrow. He is prepared to do anything to get her into his private plane, even if he needs to kidnap her.
"Well?" She asked again. "Are you always this patient?" He asked back.
She grated her teeth in frustration. "If you haven't noticed, I have been VERY patient with you since yesterday. And if you will not start talking now, I assure you, I will go home right now and to hell with what you need!" She shouted standing up.
His eyes were blinking rapidly at her outburst. Darn spitfire! "Calm down, please. Sit down and we'll talk," he said as calmly as he could.
"The cellphone is yours," he said pushing it back towards her. "I don't accept charity. I have my own," she angrily retorted. It's old but it serves her needs.
"Stop being stubborn. You need it for Yuri."
"I have not accepted the job yet," she reminded him. "Yes, you have. As I said, you will be compensated handsomely, plus, you are helping a vulnerable child. We will leave for Greece day after tomorrow. So, you have tomorrow to say goodbye to your family and friends. You can bring Yuri if you want. I doubt if he'd want to stay behind anyway. Mona, the nanny and Roberto will go with you and the body guard," he said nonchalantly as if he was just discussing the weather.
"Wait. Freeze. Rewind. Stop!" I have no intention of leaving London and going with you to Greece. My answer is no."
"I told you yesterday that our home is in Greece. How else can you be with Yuri if you won't go with us? Besides, we are your new family now."
She visibly stiffened at the mention of family. He quickly went to her side and held her hands. "Sorry. I didn't mean to be an ass. But I meant what I said. You can consider us as your family in order to make this easy for you. And we can be that if you will just allow us to. You will no longer be alone."
"Thank you," she said sincerely. "I promise you will like Greece. It's like a grand vacation," he smiled at her.
"What about the 'fiancée' issue?" Darn that beautiful head of hers. She has a good memory despite the situation.
"I hope you will trust me enough if I say that this is not the right time to discuss it yet. I assure you, my sentiments are genuine. I just don't want you to think I'm crazy."
She rolled her eyes at that. "Crazy beyond what you already think of me now. Although, it came in handy. Yuri is calling you mommy. People will not think badly knowing you're my fiancée. I don't care what they think, honestly. But for your sake and Yuri's, I will."
He went to his desk and took a small black box. "This was Isabella's. I think it would be best if you will wear this for the time being," he said emphasizing 'time being.' He went back to her, opened the box and took the ring.
"Give me your hand," he said reaching for her left hand. She gasped. "But ... but it's a diamond ring."
He smirked. "Yes, it is. As I said, this was Yuri's mom's engagement ring. As my fiancée, people will expect a ring on your finger. This is not the design I would choose for you, though. But this will do for now," and added to himself, "until I can get you your own."
She felt a tingling sensation as he was sliding the ring on her ring finger. "Get hold of yourself, Kayla. This is one big pretension for the kid's sake," she chastised herself.
"So, do we have a deal?"
"Aren't we going to put everything in writing?" She asked raising her brows at him. "I could go sell this ring and just disappear, you know. I believe this is worth at least a million dollars."
He threw his head back and laughed out loud. "You see how I trust you? I trust you more than you trust me. As sure as the sun will set in the west, you will not disappear but honor our agreement, contract or not. That you will not hurt me, errr, I mean Yuri."
"I want to hear your YES now, Michaela," he implored. "Yes, we have a deal," she squirmed as he abruptly engulfed her in a tight hug and kissed her cheeks.
"What was that for?" She asked bewildered. "To seal our agreement?" He answered coyly and she giggled. Sure, he makes her furious 9 out of 10 times, but he can make her laugh too at his silliness. Maybe this isn't a bad deal after all. She mused.
There was a knock and James came in. "Um, excuse me, sir," then turned to Michaela smiling. "Yuri is asking for you, Ms. Kayla," he beamed.
"Kayla?" Luca questioned looking at them. James literally perspired. Is he in for a reprimand? He hoped not. "She said I can call her Kayla, sir," he almost stammered in nervousness.
Luca turned to Kayla raising his brows. "Can I call you that, too?" She smiled sweetly and said, "No." James laughed discreetly.
"I'm not really sad. I have my own name for you, anyway," he said smirking.
"What?"
"Baby," his smile widened. "You will do no such thing," she hissed.
"You had your chance but you blew it ...," he paused. Then added, "baby." James was openly laughing at their bantering now. It was the first time he saw his boss of 14 years joked and smiled, a genuine smile. He never looked this happy. Perhaps finding Kayla has that effect on him.
"Luca," she hissed. But he just laughed. He stood up and reached for her hand. "I believe our son is wondering where we are, baby." He interlaced their fingers and went out of the office whistling.
The executive employees on that floor were once again treated to a picture of a sweet, loving couple they presented.
