Chapter 22 ~ The Inside Man

Chapter 22

"Yes, James?"  She heard him answer his phone.  He must have moved as she could only hear his muffled voice when he continued talking.

She gazed at her reflection in the mirror.  She was trying to cover up the enormous hickey that Luca had left her before Caterina or anyone else noticed.  She sighed.  She looked up and saw Luca grinning at the door.

"You didn't have to do this!"  She accused. 

"Of course, I had to," was the immediate reply.  "They have to know who you belong to."  He said with finality.  He came in and embraced her from behind.

"I know it's Saturday but James and Tomas are coming over.  We may need to convene after breakfast in my home office for privacy."  Luca said and his face turned serious.  "The estate will not be receiving anyone else today but them."  She nodded with understanding.

"Let me just make arrangements for Yuri," she said.  Luca shook his head.  "It's done.  Mona will be taking him after breakfast.  He already knew Mommy and Daddy would be busy today."  She nodded again.

You could hear a pen drop as silence ensued after Tomas' revelation.  It appeared that Damien, their I.T. Director was doing all the bidding of Hydra Etaipeia.  Damien was their inside man.   He was recommended by his cousin, Andreas who was Markos' trusted friend.

"Everything was clear now," his father, Geovanni commented.  "He was blocking the information from coming into light that was why it was not noticeable at first."

"What's your game plan, Luca?"  Tomas turned to him.

Luca squeezed Kayla's hand and ground his teeth.  "Put a tail on Damien 24/7 starting right now.  We need to get his accomplices before we even confront him.  Meantime, he had to be relieved of his duties as of this hour pending investigation." 

"He will be alerted right away, Sir and it may compromise our ongoing investigation," put in James.

"Precisely the purpose," Luca contemplated.  "He would be forced to contact whoever was paying him when he knew he had lost all access to the company.  That's when we swooped in."

"I agree," ditto Geovanni. 

"I as well," said Tomas while dialing his team from his phone to carry out Luca's order.

"I was supposed to meet Irena this afternoon," Helena said.  "You go ahead, dear," replied Geovanni.  "Act like your normal self." 

"That's the thing.  I do not know if I could," she said worriedly.  "I trust you can do so, mama," Luca assured her.

James started gathering all the documents scattered at the table.  "You could access everything from here, James.  You do not have to go to the office.  Besides, we wouldn't want anybody to suspect anything.  I wanted everything done in an hour."

"Consider it done, Sir," James assured him.

"Let's go find our son," Luca said to Kayla.  Everyone left Luca's home office like nothing had happened, and James was left to his devices.

"We need to talk," was the immediate response when Demetrius picked up his phone.

"I'm busy at the moment and haven't we agreed for you to not contact me on my phone?"  Demetrius was livid. 

He had no sleep last night after witnessing the unfortunate scene of Luca and Kayla at the opera house and the restaurant.  He went there to observe and learn how Luca was wooing Kayla to help him with his mission.  But he was consumed with jealousy.  Luca almost caught him on their way out.  He lingered to see if Kayla would go to the toilet so he could talk to her.  But Luca was always near her, not even a foot away the entire time they were there.  Now, this idiot, Damien was adding to his miserable morning.
