Chapter 25
Luca had picked up Yuri from the kindergarten. They were on their way home for lunch but he would not be coming back to the office. It's Friday and he had promised Kayla that weekends start on Friday afternoon. He had to pick up Yuri without Kayla today because she was a little bit under the weather this morning. If she's still not feeling well when they get home, he will throw her over his shoulders and bring her to the hospital. That woman was just as stubborn as a rock.
Yes, that woman. He smiled to himself. The thought of his wife does not fail to make him smile. His heart would constrict because of too much love for that woman. He turned his world upside down.
Yuri turned 5 years old yesterday. They had a children's party with Yuri's friends and classmates from school. She believed she had eaten something that did not agree with her stomach. But the same thing happened last week as well. He was getting concerned.
He looked at Yuri and ruffled his hair. "Mommy will not like it if you destroy her style," he complained with a giggle.
When they arrived, his nanny, Mona was already waiting for them at the entrance.
"Go with Mona, buddy," he gently told him. "I will bring mommy down so we can eat together. Wait with your giagia and pappous, okay?"
"Yes, daddy," was the immediate reply.
He went straight to their room. Kayla had texted him earlier that she stayed in their room the entire morning. That made him wish he had insisted on bringing her to the hospital earlier.
He opened the door to a dark room. The blackout curtains are drawn together and not a single light was on. It was close to midday.
"Baby," he gently called. He saw a faint light under the bathroom door and made his way there. He did not bother turning on the lights. He knocked once and opened the door. But Kayla was not there. He looked up at the mirror noticing a red arrow there. It looks like the arrow was drawn using a lipstick. The arrow was pointing down to the countertop. There was a small blue box sitting there.
"Baby, where are you?" he called and there was no answer yet again. He went in and slowly opened the box. He saw a stick and a baby shirt. He took them out and read what was written on the shirt first.
"Daddy?" he gasped. He looked down on the stick showing two red lines and realization hit him. He grabbed everything and turned to walk back into the bedroom. Suddenly, the curtains opened and he saw Kayla holding the remote to draw back the curtains allowing the sunlight into the room.
"We are pregnant?" he asked incredulously.
She smiled. "I am pregnant. You are not," she retorted smartly.
Luca put the stuff in his hands on the nearest console table and ran to her. He lifted her and swirled her around.
"You're making me dizzy," she giggled.
"Right. I'm sorry, baby," he said apologetically. He scooped her into his arms and deposited her on the bed.
"How far along are you?" he asked wanting to know everything.
"I missed my period about 3 weeks ago," she said. "We need to go to my doctor to be certain."
"We will go after lunch. She will accommodate us in a heartbeat," he assured her. Of course, when you own the hospital, nobody will dare refuse you for not having set up an appointment.
"You are a slow worker, Mr. Conti," she taunted. "It took you almost 3 years to deliver your promise to your son.
"Oh, really?" he smirked. He took his phone out and sent a quick message to his mom that they would not be joining them for lunch. Then he made sure their door was locked.
