I was sure, once, sometime, everyone had fallen in love. Girls fell in love with guys, guys fell in love with girls, guy with dog, girl with dog (if that's your kind of thing). That was just how it was. But my story was... well, somewhat different.
I was christened with the name Isabella Swan (Bella for short) and I was currently seventeen, living with my mother in Phoenix. My parents had split up a long time ago and I rarely saw my Dad, who was living in the small town of Forks, Washington. He was the Chief police there, although there wasn't much of a job as the population was so small.
I was now sitting in my car, with the windows rolled down as far as they could go as my mother drove me to the airport. It was boiling hot and I was sweating profusely whilst staring at the clear, blue sky. I was on my way to Forks, a town where it was constantly raining and was cold all of the time. Basically the complete opposite to Phoenix. I was staying with my father for who knew how long whilst my mother stayed with her new husband Phil. He was travelling for baseball.
We finally arrived at the airport where we said our goodbyes, my mother reluctantly letting me go. I boarded my plane and prepared myself for the long four-hour flight.
When I finally landed, it was raining. Typical, I thought to myself as I dragged my luggage out, searching for Charlie. I finally spotted him with his cruiser and stumbled my way over to him, where he gave me an awkward hug. We were alike in the way that we were both quiet and clumsy.
"Hey Bells. How've you been?" he asked using an old nickname. I smiled awkwardly.
"I've been pretty good, dad."
We got into his police car and drove off in silence. I sighed inwardly; this was going to be a very long 'vacation.' After a while, he broke the silence, surprising me.
"I brought you a car. It suits you," he said pleasantly.
"What kind of car?" I asked excitedly.
"It's a truck, a Chevy."
I was actually touched at his attempt to be fatherly. "Wow, thanks dad. That's absolutely amazing."
He smiled and it actually looked like he blushed a little. After that, conversation pretty much died down and I just stared out of the window for the rest of the journey. It was very green here. Lots of trees and plants. So much different to Phoenix.
Eventually, we got to Charlie's house, which was small with only two bedrooms. I didn't think he'd ever moved houses since he married my mum. It made me feel sad because I didn't think he'd ever gotten over her. Outside the house, I saw the truck he was talking about and I actually really liked it. It was perfect and it had me written all over it.
"Thanks dad," I said again gratefully. Now I would have something other than a police car to drive to school tomorrow.
I unpacked my bags in my small room and just sat on my bed, thinking about the horrors of Forks High School. There were only a horrific small 358 students, including me.
I eventually went to sleep where I dreamed of Phoenix and the sunshine, which I doubted I'd be seeing anytime soon.
When I woke up, I got myself ready for school (reluctantly, may I add) and when I couldn't stall anymore, I got into my new car and tried to figure out how to start the engine. It was freezing cold and when I finally got it working, I turned the heater on. I drove to school, trying to think of positive things. When I found the school, my heart sunk even lower. It was like a prison. It was just a bunch of brick buildings slabbed together. I sighed and parked my car, walking into the reception area. I headed up to the main desk.
"Excuse me? My name is Bella Swan. I'm new here," I said to the lady sitting behind the desk.
"Oh yes, the Chief's daughter. Here is your schedule and a map of the school."
I thanked her and walked out, realising I had English first. I checked the map and walked around until I saw the English block and I walked into my classroom, already anticipating all of the stares I would be receiving.
"I'm Bella Swan," I said to my teacher. He nodded and gestured to an empty seat near the front. I settled down and half listened while the teacher droned on about Shakespeare, which I'd already done in my school back in Phoenix.
The bell finally went and a young boy with dark black hair waddled up to me.
"Isabella, am I right?"
"Bella," I corrected, irritated.
"Bella, right, well, what's your next class?" I showed him and he beamed. "Great! We're in the same classes!"
He ended up chatting to me and walking me to my next class which was Government. I found out his name was Eric. I waved goodbye to him and went inside the class which was just as boring as English. The bell went again and a girl with curly hair walked me to the cafeteria, where I sat down with her group. I recognised Eric there as well. I was introduced to everyone but I soon forgot their names.
In the middle of lunch, I felt the cool wind of the cafeteria doors opening. I turned around and could hardly contain my gasp. I watched them walk over to the farthest table in the cafeteria and sit down.
There were five of them and all devastatingly beautiful. There were three boys, and two girls; one boy was buff and muscly; quite frightening looking, one who looked guarded with blonde hair and the last boy was tall and gangly with bronze hair. He was very attractive and made my stomach clench. The tall girl looked perfect, with a beautiful figure and golden hair. It was as if she had just walked out of a fashion magazine.
Then, I looked at the second girl and my breath was taken away. I felt my heart thud louder and louder. She was absolutely, without a doubt, the most amazing person I'd ever seen. She was very petite and looked like a dancer. She was almost pixie like, with short cropped hair that stuck up in every direction but still looked cute.
"Who are they?" I asked barely containing my disbelief, still staring at them. Jessica, I recalled, answered me.
"They're the Cullen's. They are all adopted by Dr Carlisle Cullen, and his wife. They're Edward Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Jasper Hale, Rosalie Hale and Alice Cullen," she said pointing to them each in turn. So her name was Alice? It suited her somehow.
Suddenly, it was as if she could sense I was looking at her. Her eyes flickered up to mine and I felt something burst inside my chest. I looked away quickly, in embarrassment. What was wrong with me?
Jessica suddenly blushed, and giggled slightly. "Edward is so totally gorgeous. But of course, no one here is good enough for him."
Edward... the really gangly one with the beautiful hair.
When I had the courage to look again, Alice was deep in conversation with the others, her lips hardly moving. I noticed that they all had food but hadn't so much as picked up a sandwich. Her beautiful, golden eyes went back to mine again but I couldn't read her expression. As I kept looking, I realised her eyes had a dangerous quality to them, but that just enticed me even more.
All too soon, the bell rang for the end of recess and the Cullen family swiftly stood up together and left together. All the while, I was staring at Alice, watching her move gracefully like a ballerina. She had a beautiful smile on her face with her arm through Jasper's, making my heart sting a little. What was I thinking? I was a girl for crying out loud! Yet, throughout the whole day, Alice Cullen didn't leave my mind even once.
