Amberley

"Hey! Hobos!"

Amberley let out a groan and lifted her head, blinking in confusion.

Where was she?

As she blinked the sleep out of her eyes, the memories slowly came back to her, and her surroundings focused around her. Central Park. Trees. M&Ms.

Moms.....

Amberley shot straight up in alarm. Her sweatshirt gave out, and she dropped to the ground with an oomph.

"Hey!" A pair of hands clapped in front of her face. She looked up to see a skinny, sickly looking man dressed in rags, as though he had raided a goodwill bin twelve years ago and hadn't bought anything new since. His eyes were red and bloodshot, and as he peered at Amberley's face, a mere two inches away, she could make out crust forming at the corners and surrounding his mouth.

And that smell....

"You is deaf or somethin?" He asked, spitting as he spoke. "Yous hobos are in my  tree!"

Amberley gave herself the once over. She didn't think she looked that bad, and she sure as heck didn't smell as bad as the man standing before her.

"Yo homie," Amberley struggled to her feet, palms facing outwards.  "I understand what this looks like, but I'm not a hobo, and neither is my brother." She gestured to the boy sleeping above them. "And it's cool, we'll be out of your hair as soon as he wakes up." She offered a smile, and the man's eyes narrowed.

"Fine." He spat, and turned, yanking Addison out of the tree. He landed on his left wrist with a sickening crack.

Amberley glared at him. It was perfectly fine for her to do whatever she wanted to her brother, but this strange, smelly stranger could go back to the trash can he came from.

"Don't touch my brother, you-" Amberley let out a slew of curses that would have earned her two year's worth of detentions, and the man's eyes widened.

"You little-"

And without another word Amberley grabbed her brother by the (right) wrist, and ran.

After getting cleaned up quickly in a McDonald's restroom, Amberley tucked her dead-giveaway hair into a baseball cap and strolled into a coffee house, Addison in tow.

"We need a game plan." She said, as she finished wrapping a brace around his hand she'd found in a first aide kit.

"For starters, we need airplane tickets." Addison said, grimacing.

"Too tight?"

"Just a bit."

Amberley adjusted the bandages, and continued talking.

"Well, I know for a fact that I have $400 between Evan's vending machine money, the hobo's money, and the money I took from the cash register at M&M-"

"You did what?!" Addison whispered to his sister harshly. She glared at him.

"I'm kidding. Sort of. But in my defense, who leaves a hundred dollars just lying on the ground?"

Addison opened his mouth to make a retort, but quickly shut it. He knew better than to say anything.

"I have $500, because unlike you, I was smart enough to grab my own money before I left." He said loftily, but Amberley wasn't paying attention.

"Look! A penny! That makes $400 dollars and one cent!"

Addison opened his mouth to retort, but was silenced by the sight of their faces plastered across the TV.

"..... Unidentified couple said to have broken into M&M world last night at around 2 AM, and although they were said to be armed it appears that no one was harmed in the chase that took place later on, nor did the rebellious duo take anything. Photos display the two, seemingly in their early teens, the girl with an excessive amount of white makeup and hair dye and the boy-"

Amberley' nose wrinkled with disgust. That's what everyone assumed. She just had an obsession with the color white, or wore too much makeup and had dyed her hair a stupid color, or that she and Addison weren't related. It wasn't fair! Why couldn't she just have been born like her brother, with smooth, dark skin and hair and eyes? It disgusted her.

But then she thought of her moms, who had always told her that, families come in different packages, and that the more different each package may be, the more beautiful, too.

And that thought shook her back on track.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" She turned to her brother, who had staring at her expectantly.

"What are you waiting for?" He asked. Amberley rolled her eyes and grabbed his hand.

"We already have four hundred dollars and one cent, let's go get...." Amberley paused, trying to think of how much money they'd probably need.
"Five hundred ninety nine dollars and ninety nine cents!"
