Amberley knew her brother like she knew her own mind. And in that moment, she knew he was done. Done with the not knowing, done with the new world they had entered, done with not getting any answers, done with not being able to do anything. And frankly, so was Amberley.
"Addison!" She called out, "wait up!"
Finally, she slowed her pace as she caught up with the fuming boy.
"Man." Amberley panted. "I didn't realize you'd been working out! Heck, I didn't realize you knew where the gym was!"
Addison shot his sister a look.
"Not the time?"
Addison sped up.
"Ads, come on!" Amberley called out. "We'll figure this out!"
"No, we won't, Amberley." Addison turned on her. "You heard the President - we're just kids!"
"You heard the president - we're just kids!" Amberley mimicked, and rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right. And they're just adults who are too busy running around like chickens with their heads cut off to properly analyze the problem."
Addison frowned. "Did you just properly use a simile and the word analyze in a sentence?" Amberley Knit her eyebrows together.
"What?"
"Never mind." Addison shook his head. But what are we supposed to do? Grab the missing case file, a few weapons and sneak out by night?" He was being sarcastic, but Amberley's eyes put up at the idea.
"Exactly! I'm so lucky to have such a smart brother!" Amberley gave Addison a quick squeeze.
"I'm gonna go ask Evan where we're staying!" Amberley skipped off.
"But- wait- Amberley!" Addison called, and ran after her.
Evelyn Grimm sat in her office, a bored expression on her face as she twirled a lock of honey blonde hair. She sighed and looked out her tenth - story office window, where she had a dazzling view of the Eiffel Tower as the sun set. (Though she had never truly appreciated it.)
"Miss Grimm!" Her security guard, Paul Lewis came bursting in, nearly tripping over a house plant. (Fake, of course. Evelyn couldn't be bothered with something as petty as having to take care of a plant.)
Evelyn's ice blue eyes seemed to bore into poor Paul's very soul.
"What?" She hissed.
"We have Kathryn and Sienna Axel downstairs. What are we to do with them?" Evelyn rolled her eyes.
"I don't know - throw them in the dungeon or something! And like, be sure to feed them. We like, have to keep them alive so the little brats will come." Evelyn frowned. "At least, that's how it works in the movies."
Paul stood there trembling.
"With all do respect, ma'am, we don't have a dungeon."
"Then the basement!"
"We don't have a-"
"JUST DO IT!"
Paul scurried off, once again barely avoiding the fake house plant.
Evelyn smiled to herself. Little did the world know, Evelyn Grimm, multi-million dollar ditz, had a plan of her own.
Evan had led the twins to a small, basic room like that of a hotel, with a kitchenette, two beds, a TV with all of three stations, and a bathroom.
"There is an hour where the security cameras go off to recharge, around 2 AM." She warned. "But don't worry, this is a very secure facility, nearly impossible to get to. You guys'll be fine." She gave them one last smile, and closed the door behind her.
Addison had wanted to order a salad for dinner, claiming "they needed the nutrients," yet he gave in after Amberley grabbed two cokes and a bag of jelly beans from the mini fridge.
So that's why each twin lay sprawled across the floor, clutching their stomachs.
"Alright." Amberley rolled over so she could face her twin. "We need a game plan."
"Here." Addison grabbed a map from off the bed.
"We are here." He pointed to their little room. "We know from Evan that security goes off at around 2AM, so that's when we want to leave." Amberley nodded.
"Our best shot would be to climb up the slide and into M&M world, and sneak out through the storage room stairs." He said, tracing the path.
"But where would we get the weapons?" Amberley asked. Addison frowned.
"Weren't you paying attention to the video?"
"Well, yeah." Amberley wouldn't meet his gaze. "At least, the first ten minutes of it."
Addison sighed. "There's a secret compartment in the storage room." Amberley nodded and finger gunned him.
"Cool beans."
Amberley lay awake on her bed, clutching the provisions pack they had created a few hours ago. She double checked it again, to find the same thing she had every time she had checked - knives, some fruit, a bottle of water, a lighter, a sweatshirt, a flashlight, and, the one thing her brother didn't know she carried with her, a picture of the four of them.
It was from last summer, when Sienna and Kathryn had taken them to Botswana, so they could see their birth town.
Africa is often called a very poor continent, and whilst most parts were, Amberley and Addison wished more people were aware of the more prosperous parts. Botswana, for example, was the 4th richest African country as of 2016. In the photo, Amberley, Addison, Sienna, and Kathryn stood in front of a beautiful white skyscraper which towered over a glittering blue lake. A group of rowdy teenagers had been making funny faces behind them as the picture was taken, and Amberley remembered her family laughing so hard that day.
The girl quickly wiped at non existent tears and looked out the window, towards a glittering crescent moon.
"It's gonna be alright, you know." Amberley turned to see her brother, awake. She smiled at him.
"I know, Addison. We've got each other, and we're the best team this world had ever seen."
Suddenly, Amberley's phone buzzed from her night table. It was 2 AM.
Addison walked over to the door and opened it, pack already on. He turned to his sister.
"Ready?"
No, I am not ready. Amberley thought to herself. We are about to embark on a quest to save our moms, who could be Christ knows where with nothing but a backpack of provisions and maybe a gun, which we probably will end up killing our selves with.
"Ready."
