~~~~Java's POV~~~~
After about fifteen minutes of walking, I realize that that highway Ethan was talking about isn't just through some woods, but through a long slew of walking. Finally, Livi asks the question that has been dwelling on our minds since the 4th abandoned street sign, "Ethan, I thought you said that the highway wasn't too far away."
Ethan replies, " I guess it's farther than I thought."
"Uh, you think?"
30 minutes later...
We break through another patch of woods, and we see it. The long-awaited highway. A sigh of relief goes through the whole group. For the first time in a while, conversation breaks out between people. "Quiet down, everybody," Ethan says. "We need to be very careful with what we say and do and when we say and do those things because there could be more people or more of those things out here.Now if we head to the right, in about five minutes we should arrive at a Wal-Mart, so everyone follow me and Java to the highway. Just remember to be very careful."
We walk down the hill and jump off the curb onto the freeway. We take a right and continue walking to the store ahead. Everybody is whispering to each other and making jokes. They're trying to be extra quiet just in case they attract any zombies or any other people that might be around.
Very soon, we arrive in a city. "What town is this?" I ask.
Ethan responds, "I think it's Warner Robins." I look around and see Lowes, Wal-Mart, Books-A-Million, and other stores. Ethan steers the group to the Wal-Mart.
In a few minutes, we arrive at the Wal-Mart.
"Okay. Java, Livi, stand beside me," Ethan orders. Livi and I stand next to Ethan. We walk towards the automatic doors; they open.
"Follow me," Ethan says. Everyone walks with Ethan inside the store, weapons at hand. Immediately, we hear moans. Zombies. Everyone looks around. "FOUND ONE!" someone says; we all start walking towards them. Livi points her gun at the zombie. "No," Ethan tells her. "If you shoot it and there happen to be more in here, then they'll surround us." He takes out his knife and walks towards the zombie; he stabs it in its forehead, but before he can pull his knife out, another one pops up from around a corner right into Ethan's face.
Ethan stumbles back and trips. The zombie gets down and tries to attack Ethan. Helplessly, he tries to back away; I take out my knife and stab the zombie in the back of its head. I help Ethan up and I get his knife out of the other zombie's head and hand it to him.
"Thanks," he says.
"No problem," I respond. Ethan brushes himself off.
"Okay, guys," I say, "let's head this way." I signal to my left. Everyone begins walking.
"Make sure you stay in groups of two or three; we don't want anyone to die like I almost did," Ethan says. Everyone gets paired up. Livi, Ethan and I pair up. We search in the cereal aisle. However, most of the boxes were tipped over and empty. We managed to get a box of Honey-Comb and Krave.
"Everyone meet at the cash registers in the front!" Ethan yells. We all head to the front.
"You doin' okay?" Livi asks me regarding my hand.
"Yeah. I'm fine," I respond.
"I'm glad you're okay," Ethan chimes in.
"Thanks, guys. Y'all are the best." I put my arms around them as we reach the front where everyone else is. I notice something, though. I see Alan in the back; he's looking at the doors. He had a look of fear on his face. I take my arms off of Ethan and Livi and walk towards him. As the doors come into my field of view. I see a zombie slowly walking towards the door, but as I get closer, more and more zombies come into view. As the entire door comes into view, there seems to be about 25 to 30 zombies.
I immediately panic and yell out to everyone, "GET YOUR GUNS OUT!" I pull my gun out and point it towards the doors; everyone else does the same. I can sense the waves of panic that ran across the group. The zombie in the very front gets close enough to the doors for them to open. All hell breaks lose. The people in the front begin shooting while the ones in the back run to the front to help out. "EVERYONE STOP SHOOTING!" Ethan commands. "Someone's gonna get shot! Dakota, Livi, come with me." Livi, who hasn't seen the horde yet says, "This must be big; he's calling you by your real name." She takes out her gun as the horde enters her field of view.
All three of us begin firing. In practically no time, we take out the group. Ethan walks towards the doors and looks out the sides."ALL CLEAR!" he shouts. Everyone walks outside the doors.
"Now that that's over, what did everyone get?" Ethan asks. I hear a strange noise. It sounds like footsteps coming from behind me. I turn around but see no one.
But before I can turn around, I feel someone put their hand on my mouth. I see other masked people cup everyone else's mouths. I can tell that there are more of them than us. I begin to panic immensely. I try to kick and fight back, but it's useless; they are much stronger than I am. Everyone else in my group does the same but to no avail.
One person stands in front of us all. He is masked and wears a long, black coat. He sizes us up for a minute. He finally speaks, "Put guns to their heads."
