*flashback
I walked into the audition hall, barely able to breathe. My body was shaking with nervousness and excitement. I had been preparing for this moment for so long, and now I would see if all my hard work paid off.

I smiled at the other musicians around me who were practicing and talking to their friends. I could tell they thought I had no chance to get picked for the symphonic band. I was by far the youngest one auditioning, and most of them have been in the band for years. Well, I was going to do my best anyways. I had nothing to lose. I was just out of college and I had worked so incredibly hard to try to get a job in a symphonic band. My chance was finally here.

I got my saxophone out of its case and started going through my scales to get warmed up. I was so nervous that my breath was shaking, causing my sound to do the same. I closed my eyes for a moment and just breathed.

It was finally my turn to go audition. I just wanted to get this over with. I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. I said my name, instrument, and piece I was auditioning with, and then was given the go ahead to begin when I was ready.

The piece I had chosen started out slowly with an eerie melody, then sped up into technical scales, and then ended with a quiet whisper.

I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and began to play. As soon as I started playing, all the fear fled from my body. I shut out everything else around me and just played for me. I let my soul speak through the music that was coming through my instrument. I let out all of the emotion, pain, and hurt I had felt in my life, and put everything I had into the music.

This music healed me in a way I could never describe. It was a vessel for me to express my pain and emotion. I ended the song and finally opened my eyes. I could feel my music resonating throughout the hall and creating a sense of peace. I had put everything I had into playing that piece, and I don't think I could have done any better. I smiled at the judges, said thank you, and walked off stage.

Needless to say, I got the job.

I woke up, hoping that everything had been a dream. One look at the hospital room surrounding me told me that this was my reality. I felt numb. I couldn't cry any more, and I was tired of thinking about everything. I laid in my bed, not feeling anything, until a nurse came in. I had no idea how much time had passed, or even what day it was. The nurse smiled at me and told me to drink the water that was next to my bed. I did and she then asked me if I wanted to eat, to which I replied no to.

She then handed me my phone and asked if I wanted her to call anyone for me. I shook my head no and told her that I would. She nodded and left the room, looking sorry for me. I hated seeing the pity on her face.

I stared at my phone without opening it for who knows how long. Who would I even call? I suppose I should call my parents...

I sat there for a while, trying to muster up the courage to call them. Finally I opened my phone and called my mom. The phone rang for a while, but no one answered. Real shocker there. I decided to leave a message anyways.

"Hi mom, umm it's Autumn... I just wanted to let you know that I was in a pretty bad car accident and I'm in the hospital, but I'm ok I guess. Umm I don't know all the details yet, but I thought you might want to know... ok.. so call me back? Ok. Thanks... bye."

I hung up and let out the breath I didn't realize I had been holding. I didn't feel like calling my dad so I figured I'd just let my mom tell him what had happened. I really hoped they didn't come visit me.
