Chapter One
"Drew, get your stuff down here! If we're gonna' leave we need to go now." My mom beckons from the living room. Exhaling in excitement rather than frustration, I quickly grab my two navy duffel bags. I had been waiting for this day for a long time. Readjusting the bag sliding off my right shoulder, I turn and do a double check to make sure I have not forgotten anything; although I know I hadn't.
My eyes wander over my wall plastered in awards and pictures of my best friend, Alexandria. My eyeballs cachet over to the now empty shoebox lying on my floor. If we were going to be gone a whole month, like my family did every summer, then I needed the entirety of my collection. I couldn't leave my Converse shoes. They were like my children and the mere idea of abandoning them was unthinkable.
"Drew, I mean it. If you don't want to take a bus to Edisto, get your butt in here!" I blow my auburn hair out of my eyes, brushing my bangs behind my right ear. Taking one last look at my room, I flip the light switch, following my mother's wishes. When I enter the living room, I'm greeted by a load of suitcases lying prone on the floor. Disturbed by the odd placement of the luggage, I lift up two of the suitcases. Trapped underneath is my younger brother Dalton.
Trying to conceal a smirk, I offer my hand out. "Need help, buddy?" I inquire.
He graciously accepts my hand. After he gets up he wipes off his shirt and replies, "Who knew dad's suitcase could be so heavy?" I then omit a laugh.
"Apparently everyone but you."
He glares at me and I pat his head. I drag my bags into the kitchen, where a rather flustered mom awaits me.
Her forehead is furrowed. You can see the gray hairs she's been working on hiding, and her garb of a t-shirt and sweatpants are wrinkled in an unruly manner. Just from her body language, hands on hips and lips pursed, you can tell she is definitely stressed. "Finally," she begins shoving food bags into my arms along with my personal items.
"Load these up in the car please so we can go. If we don't leave now it'll be dark by the time we get there. You know how your father hates driving at night."
Nodding, I respond. "I know, mom. Just calm down. It'll be alright."
She inhales then exhales, a major stress reliever for her. However, to me it seems rather useless.
"You're right. We just need to head out."
"This is the last thing that needs to be loaded, Mom. Then, we drive out to Edisto Island, South Carolina. Just remember all the relaxing time there. A whole month with no stress. Won't you enjoy that?"
A serene look passes over her face and she nods. I walk off smirking. I was certainly the most excited about Edisto. It was my own little world. If anyone knew anything about it, it was me. I believe I could sell the island to a foreigner in a matter of minutes. I wouldn't let anyone crash my buzz. In fact, I don't think anyone could. My family could practically see the energy oozing from every orifice. What could I say? It is my favorite place in the entire world.
As I exit the house, I find my dad working on loading all the bags into our champagne colored Explorer. "You alright dad?" I implore when I find him cursing at the car door that had just shut on his finger. He stops dead in his tracks and his blue eyes get wide when he realizes that I'm in his presence.
"Um, I'm just fine sweetie. This door wont shut right is all." Gracefully, I set down the food and bags in the back, then I shut the door.
"There you go, dad."
