Chapter Four

Why did Adam have to be the one to pick us up? I am positioned in between the two of them with both holding my hand, as if screaming paparazzi ahead. I just accept the upcoming issue and save my question for in the car. We all make it maybe twenty steps farther before the paparazzi blinds and deafens us.

"Blake, are you and Miranda over?".

"Adam, are you and Anne through?".

"Mckenzie, how do you feel about all of this?". The lights are so blinding that I put on my sunglasses. I have to think to myself over and over, "Don't say anything! Don't say anything!". We slowly push our way through the mob with security by our side.

After what feels like forever, we are in the car and I can ask the one question that's been on my mind. "Why is Adam the one to pick us up?".

"Because I asked him to. Okay, Mckenzie?".

"No, Dad. It's not okay! You're getting a divorce because of him and now you have him pick us up!".

"We're getting a divorce because your mother cheated and accused me of cheating. Not because of Adam. Adam is picking us up because he'll be staying with us since Anne kicked him out after your mother told her that he was cheating. Your not the only one whose world got shattered".

I don't even know how to respond to him, so I put my beats back on and end up singing along with the music.

She walks to school

With her arms crossed

It's just another day

At 10 o clock she hears this screaming

Then finally she sees them

It's scary how things change

And I saw the story on the news

I saw the footage from the roof

I sat down and cried

Didn't she call you

Didn't she need you bad enough

Was there some reason

Another way up

Did you not write it down

Just one more thing to do

Where were you

And didn't she pray too

He kissed his wife good bye

And took the earliest flight

So he could be home that night

To put his kids to sleep

Down the aisle

Three men walked and said

We're here to die for our God

He stood up and said that's funny

Cause my God died for me

I put the magazine down

I read his words out loud

I sat down and cried

Didn't he call you

Didn't he need you bad enough

Was there some reason

Another way up

Did you not write it down

Just one more thing to do

Where were you

And didn't he pray to

The taxis pulled up

On the very day

They rode 100 floors up

Just to come back down

They never thought they'd see the day

That the towered be up in flames

There was nothing left to say

When it all came down

And didn't they call you

Didn't they need you bad enough

Was there some reason

Another way up

Did you not write it down

Just one more thing to do

Where were you

Where were you

And didn't they pray to oh

I walk to school

And I wear a cross

I'm counting

Every day

I sing along song after song, getting lost in the music until we finally pull up to the fence of my new house. Adam punches in the code before continuing to drive up to the estate. He pulls into the garage and I hop out. "Your room is on the third floor, first door on the right", Daddy says leaving me to discover the house and unpack the boxes that had already been delivered.

I walk around the house and end up in Adam's room. He's laying on the bed on his phone looking at pictures of himself and Anne. "I'm sorry" I muttered, voice barely above a whisper.

"Why would you be? It's my fault, remember. You said it yourself".

"That's not fair! I was just mad and confused and blaming anyone".

"You made that part really clear. Get out", Adam stated coldly.

"What?".

"GET OUT!".
