You lay in bed, staring at the ceiling as Karkat silently snores beside you. Your hands rub over your face and you sigh. Another restless night. Ever since you adopted Kara as your own, you haven't slept. And when you did, Karkat woke you up with a worried expression. You remember a few years back waking up in a cold sweat before deciding that you would sleep during the day, when Karkat had an eye on her. Of course, she was plenty old enough now to tell you when something was wrong. She is five after all, and is incredibly smart. She knew a lot more words than both you and Karkat combined, and it wasn't swear words. You and him both try your best to hold back your tendencies around her, but when hanging out with everyone else you guys swear your butts off, complaining about 'how hard it is to raise a small daughter that knows more than an adult.'
Back on the restless night problem; you have never... never... in your life wanted to lose so much sleep. You always went to bed early to get the most sleep you could get before school. You even went to sleep early on the weekends! Despite you being that chilled back awesome dude, you always wanted to make sure you took care of yourself.
But now that you have a child, you constantly find yourself smiling at everything she does. She acts like Karkat a lot, easily agitated and might have psychopathic traits, but when she was happy, she was the most adorable thing you had ever seen in your life. Even Eridan was jealous of hearing about Kara and her antics.
You hear the patter of little feet and snap out of your thoughts. In the middle of the door frame stands Kara, her blanket trailing behind her. "Daddy?" she nervously whispers.
You hop out of bed and place Kara on your hip. "Hey there, why are you out of bed?" you whisper back.
"I can't sleep..." she mumbles, digging her face into your side.
You struggle to keep her up and not drop your daughter. "You wanna sleep with me?"
The nubby horns slightly jabbing your side indicates a yes. You walk back over to bed and place her in the middle of you and Karkat. The troll shifts and his eyes flutter open. "Dave?"
You hold up a finger to your mouth and mutter "Kara can't sleep"
Karkat makes a slight "Oh," sound and smiles. He grabs Kara and pulls her close to him, and Kara melts into him. Karkat places his head on the smaller hybrid, closing his eyes. You can't help but smile as you fall asleep without any nightmares for once.

You wake up, slightly dazed. Kara is gone and- oh, so is Karkat. Hopefully he's with her somewhere safe. Even though Kara might be the closest with Karkat, you can't help but worry more than Karkat does.
You sit up and rub your eyes, yawning as you do so. Yesterday was full of babies and Karkat, and it was exhausting. That was how Kara got so obsessed with dinosaurs; you spent every dollar you had on plushies for her. Karkat was also amazed at all the technology that was foreign to him. Moving heads, sounds, and projectors amazed him. If he had a tail and walked on four legs, you would call him Karcat. You laugh a little at your pun and get out of bed, quickly putting on sweatpants and walking out of the bedroom to the kitchen.
There was Kara, eating toast with Karkat. He had messy hair, but in the morning it was always the messiest and it was adorable. Kara also had hair all over the place, even though it was placed in a firm ponytail most likely by Karkat.
Kara eats her toast and hops off of the seat, running at you and hugging your leg. She giggles before running off to her room most likely planning on playing with her Barbies.
You smile and sit next to Karkat. "She seems energetic today."
"Yeah. She got excited after I told her about the other trolls." Karkat sits back in his chair. "We really should have everyone meet Kara, we talk about her enough."
Your eyes dart around the room. "But what if she starts acting like them? Gamz is a bit extreme, all Terezi is gunna do is prank her, and Eridan is probably gunna weep about his quadrants and end up telling her a bunch of shit she doesn't need to know yet." You sigh. "I want her to keep her innocence as long as possible."
Karkat stands up and places a hand on your shoulder. "She is going to be going to school and meeting people eventually, so you gotta man up Strider. Where is all this cool-guy bullshit you used to pull?"
"It's all cool-dad now." You laugh.
Karkat gives a small laugh and kisses your cheek. "She persuaded me to play with her because of her puppy eyes. She learns a lot from you, Strider." He winks before walking off.
The thought of school infiltrates your mind. Trolls don't nearly have as many rights as humans, and with the increase in hybrids it defiantly scares you. You don't want her to get hurt.
Over the 3 years you have had Kara; humans have become the same way they were when you entered the game. Ignorant creatures with nothing better to do with their lives. Of course, it was much worse now, but you tried your best to not be as pessimistic, unlike your grumpy, snarky, boyfriend. You loved him anyways.
The fact of Kara taking after you makes you chuckle. If anything, she acts like Karkat. She has grown to look even more like you though. If she didn't have the horns, people could mistake her for a younger you. Ah, the days when you were younger and Bro still took care of you. Those were the times... when you were that apple-juice drinking Mr. I'm-the-best person-in-the-world. Those were definitely the times. And when you met the trolls? Boy, you never thought life could get any better. Sure, Gamzee still hates you after that clown video, but it was funny when you figured out why he was so mad.
The phone ringing snaps you out of your head. You found yourself doing that a lot more lately, staring into the empty void of nothingness. You think that it might be Rose, or John, or some random telemarketer wanting to sell you those awesome peppermint Girl Scout cookies. Your favorite was the lemon though, and so were Karkat's, but you can easily settle for peppermint.
You pick up the phone and are surprised to hear a familiar voice on the other end. "Eridan?" you question. Sounds like he was being jumped by a group of other sea dwellers even though they were the minority.
"DAVE. I'M SO MAD RIGHT NOW- WAS EARTH LIKE THIS BEFORE?!" He screeches.
"Bro, calm down. What're you talking about?"
"It's better if you come and see for yourself Dave." He demands.
"Fine, fine." You sigh and quickly hang up. You put on clothes before dashing out of the house. You call Eridan again and ask, "Where am I supposed to go?"
"The pier. It's a fucking massacre."
You arrive moments later to see Feferi running up at you. "Eridan is freaking out and I can't calm him down!" she grabs your arm and starts leading you to him, "He's so mad right now- and, and, he's like screaming at the top of his gills and it's hurting my ears and I am incredibly worried right now!"
You try to calm Feferi down but fail as she practically carries you down the walkway. You see Eridan at the edge of the pier, his hands on his head and pacing back and forth on the dull brown planks.
What you see at the end though scares you.
It more or less wishes you weren't a human anymore.
Humans can be complete assholes.
