CHAPTER TEN / LAST CHAPTER:

| ashton’s pov |

My fingers tapped a familiar beat on the table. I had nothing to do today. Well, I had nothing to do any day, really.

All I did was wait and wait for some kind of miracle that was probably never going to happen.

If there was a cure for this… condition, I’d love to have it.

But if there wasn’t, then there was nothing I’d love more than to spend my last days with Charlotte.

Communication was rough and unsteady, but we loved each other. I knew we loved each other. I could feel it in every word and every letter.

My phone started to vibrate, surprising me in the slightest. No one called me these days, except my mum.

I didn’t know who the caller was, so I picked it up, maybe it was someone important.

“Hello?” The greeting was a mix of politeness and uncertainty.

“Ashton?”

I instantly grinned at the voice– Charlotte’s voice.

“Charlotte! How are you?” I asked; I became my cheery self again. Love does work wonders.

She coughed from the other end, but it didn’t sound like a cough from a sickness. It sounded more of an attempt to hide something, which probably was laughter.

“Good. Um, yeah, I’m coming home this Christmas,” she informed, in a hurried manner.

Although I was at a lost as to why she suddenly started to speed up the pace of the conversation, I felt a genuine feeling of joy.

“I’m so gla-“

“I have to go, Ashton. Sorry, bye.” And with that, she ended the call.

I had no hard feelings, though– she did have to study, even though I think her exams ended a week ago. She was working hard for her future. I had no right to get in the way of it.

But I was happy.

I’m going to see her, finally.
