"Why do you think I helped you get away from Everest, Avery?" I jump at the sound of Gabe's voice in my bedroom. I had closed the door to my room after Dad tried to make conversation with me downstairs. I've been talking and catching up with Alex for the majority of the afternoon, but when I came home, Dad was waiting in the kitchen to talk to me about the attack on my mate. He won't back down, and when that became apparent, I stormed to my room.
Only to find Gabe lounging on my bed, a determined yet perplexed expression on his face.
"Goddess, Gabe, you scared me." I tell him, walking over to the closet and pulling on some comfier clothes. I don't mind getting dressed in front of Gabe; he has a mate, and he's gay.
"Why do you think I helped you get away from Everest?" he repeats. I turn to face him, now wearing shorts and a tank top. It takes a minute before I realise he's looking for an actual answer.
"Uh, I don't know." I answer honestly after a minute. Thinking about it, I can't come up with a reason why he would want to help me, especially since he didn't even know me well.
"And why do you think I told you about why he wants to kill you?"
"Because I asked and you're a nice person?" it comes out more of a question than a reply. Gabe stares at me long and hard for a few seconds before sighing and standing up from the bed.
"Come with me." he says, walking over to the window and opening it, before neatly jumping out. With one last glance around the room, I find myself following suit and meeting him on the ground. We sprint through the trees in human form, to the beach.
"What are we doing?" I question, tying my hair up with a tie on my wrist. Gabe chuckles, and I don't expect the attack at all. He lunges towards me and socks me in the cheek, effectively knocking me down onto the sand. "Gabe!" I yell, my wolf surfacing. He pays no mind to me, however, and lands another blow in my ribs.
He goes in for another hit to my face, but I grab his wrist and twist it, confusion and anger clouding my vision. The wolf smirks at me and stands up, but I mirror his actions. We circle each other for a few seconds, and I start letting my wolf come forward. I don't know why Gabe is doing this, but that doesn't mean I'm going down without a fight.
The little bastard tricks me, pretending to go in for a kick on my side, but as I grab his leg to prevent the impact, he grabs two of my fingers and twists them painfully. My wolf starts to work on fixing the fracture and goes in for the kill at the same time. This male has pissed her off no end.
I jump forward and roundhouse-kick him in the head, sending him into a tree. But he gets back up, eyes swirling black, and lets his fangs come out. I do the same, along with my claws. My wolf wants a go at him, but I hold her back. Just a little while longer.
He runs forward at an impossible speed and rips his teeth in to my shoulder. I hiss at the pain and dig my claws into his face, causing him to let go.
This time, when the rage comes, I do let her out. I shift into my wolf and run backwards, crouching down low on my belly and showing him my teeth. He too shifts into a blonde wolf and growls lowly at me. Taunting me. Without a second thought, my wolf tears forward and battles with Gabe, tearing into his shoulder. Blood pours from his new wound but he doesn't let that stop him. His jaws clamp down on my front leg and I fall down on the floor painfully. Gabe uses this as an opportunity to try and get to my neck, but I use both my hind legs to push him off me. The crack is from the snapping of one of his ribs. Standing up limply, I growl at him and bare my teeth.
