A strange shadow consumed our lands, casting a dim glow upon the savage green creatures. I knelt on a rock, pulling my arm back to retrieve a wooden arrow whilst Emrain slashed his long sword clean through the flesh of the red horned minions.
Crimson spilled over the glowing fields, that once danced with pixies now dance with the lingering aroma of a reckless nature.
Once the nock of the arrow clicked into the string of the bow, I pulled my knuckles to my cheek, aiming through the line of charging red demons- their colossal hooves shook the ground each time my heart would beat, lashing their spears and bold voices in the air.
The arrow flew from my fingers and darted through a tense gust of wind, driving the arrowhead clean through the middle of the beast's eyes, sliding through the back of its head and into its partner's behind him.
"Yes!" I raised my arm in triumph, as Emrain padded over and shook my shoulder with his smirk.
"I didn't think I'd live to see you achieve such a shot." Emrain snickered.
I gasped, "Are you saying I was that bad back then?" I pretended to be offended, but really I just was glad I had someone to be sarcastic with again.
"Ah, well, let's be honest-" I chuckled along with him, as he stayed silent.
Silence? Not by my best friend.
I turned around, looking on his pain-staking face. "Em?" My voice started to shake.
He held his hands to his stomach, glaring at me with his eyes shaken. I looked at him, terror-stricken, and trimmed my fingers to his hands, pulling them away slowly.
A jagged piece of a bloodstained spearhead protruded from his gut, his leather armor soaked up the crimson trickle of the wound.
My fingers started to tremble, as a teardrop trickled down my dusted face.
I felt a rough hand guide upon my cheek and darted my eyes up from the wound.
He collapsed to the ground, trying to catch himself with his hands but he only fell flat on his back harder.
He tried to let out a chuckle, but only a blood-curdling cough escaped his blood-tainted lips.
I held my hand on the wound, looking around frantic.
"It's okay, Em. I'll get you help. Just-" I looked around, tearing my sleeve off and pressed it onto the wound. "You're gonna be okay, Em, you're gonna be-" I tried to catch my breath, as tears puddled at my eyes. He reached his weak hand to my cheek, spreading a smile on his bloodstained lips.
"It's okay" He coughed. "Melithar..." He whispered, making my blood run.
"No, it's not, Emrain! You're dying and-and I'm gonna," I looked at him terrified, my mouth parted as my breath staggered. "And I'm, and I'm gonna save you. Okay?" I had force in my words, but I could feel him slipping away.
I looked around, crying out for help, but that only caught the attention of the beasts. They roared, but nothing louder than my mind.
Grey clouds rolled over the hills, parting a stream of light to surround us. My mind still fogged as he grazed his rough hand over my soft cheek, causing me to shiver as our skin touched.
"What are you-"
I was frozen.
Like every other she-elf, I had always admired how stoic Emrain looked in his armor, how he pranced on Nolass like he really belonged. His golden-green eyes caught the light just right when he flashed his devilish smirk at you, pulling his long hair back behind his thin ears. My gaze slipped slower at him now, seeing how vulnerable we both were at this moment, kept me feeling alone like always. But lying so close to him now made my blood run through the blades of grass like a pixie towards the sun.
For a gasping second, I thought I'd lost the brightness in his eyes as my free hand trimmed his trembling cheek.
"It's okay, Emrain..." I choked to speak. "You can go..." I tried to push myself off him, closing a fist.
Lying this close to him, I knew every quaking moment I was hanging on a loose thread. What do I want? I don't know, nor do I care, but Emrain grappled his loose hand on my back, pulling me in close. I could feel the rippling of his breath on my stomach, his blood rushing through his veins wrapped around mine to intertwine us together.
His gaze was intense, almost threatening, as I looked into his glowing eyes once again. The soft hand around my cheek, brushing it through my hair and pulling me in close...
Is this what I wanted our last memory to be? I hadn't an idea of what to do, but Emrain did. He kept our bodies close and warm until our trembling lips collided in an evergreen kiss.
I felt the life of him, our laughing moments and the times we shared in fear. But like water, it's waves crashed as soon as it soared, even when it was right in front of me...
Emrain's choking breath filled my lungs until his body fell limp, losing all motions until the light in his eyes flickered in his last, quaking breath...
"You're the only one who didn't want to love me..."
