I woke up the next day, still in the same position I remembered before I had closed my eyes for my "cat nap". I felt I hadn't even been asleep that long, but the sun was delicately shining through the blinds in our bedroom while the birds were in full morning song. A hint of fresh coffee lingered through the air. Max must be up already. Max! I cursed in a hushed whisper, "Shit. Max must be so pissed right now. This might not be such a great day." I groaned and reached for my cell phone to check the time. It was already 10 a.m., and I was at least glad it was our day off together. Maybe I'll make it up to Max tonight. I had slept over 15 hours, and I figured my energy level would improve after I got a cup of coffee in me. I got out of bed, stretched and made my way into the bathroom. I stood, looking in the mirror at my smeared make up from the previous day and realized I was also still in the same clothes I had worn at work the day before. "Get your shit together Kat!" I told myself as I turned on the knobs to the shower. No kids between Max and I yet, so I would just wrap up in a towel and go in the kitchen for my coffee. Maybe it would tease Max enough to where I could make up my lack of interest the night before to him.
The pipes behind the shower wall gurgled and made a loud, hollow whistle and the water began to come out the faucet. Damn old pipes! Any time anyone used any faucet in the house, they always made noise. Our house was old and quaint. Max's parents had given it to us as a marriage gift and got themselves a smaller place instead. It wasn't glamorous, and they had been getting older and their kids had grown. They kept the place in a 1970's decor, and really only maintained the home until a bare minimum. I wasn't picky though, and we were happy to have no house payment upon becoming newlyweds. I had tried to decorate it a bit more up to speed, but plumbing was something neither I nor Max had any idea about fixing. It worked just fine, just a little noisy. But this particular morning, of all mornings, the pipes screamed extra loud and I knew they would be heard throughout the house. "Damn. Now the jig is up. He knows I'm awake!" I hurriedly showered just in case he would come into our bathroom while I showered. I wanted to tease him in my towel before we said anything to each other, just to ease the possibility of tension and awkwardness at my mistake. I reached for my white fluffy towel beside the shower and stepped onto the warm rug beneath my feet and dried off. I swing my hair down and wrapped it into my towel and I flipped back up and put on my robe. I rushed to the bedroom, grabbed my brushed, brushed my hair quickly and then messed it up a little for a sexier effect. I took off my robe and wrapped up in my towel, and headed down the hallway to the kitchen to surprise Max.
But when I got to the kitchen, there was no sign of Max. Coffee pot was still on, the living room tv was playing a football game he had been wanting to see for a few weeks. He never leaves during a good game, I thought. I checked my phone to see if he had sent a text letting me know where he went, but my message box had no new messages. "That's strange", I said aloud. No one to hear me but our cat, but he wasn't any help. He walked up to me and rubbed himself back and forth bettered my feet, only expecting no food. "Ok Kit. Let's go get your food." I turned around and reached above the fridge where I kept his cat food and filled his bowl up. As I started to put the food back, I noticed a note on the freezer door. It was from Max. My heart sank as I read the note:Kat,
I know everything.
