After I got all dressed and stylish, I
decided to go a more simple look that would acquire a suntan that I knew I would need before my final reflection of myself became revealed on the first day of school. I was sure that my father would be making his rounds in the garden before summer ended. I slipped on a older skirt that was bigger on me, and belted it to stay on. I got out a simple tank top to ensure my arms would get full sun. I slipped on the sandals that my mother passed on to me to complete my unintentional sun bathing look. My parents did not approve of exposing yourself to the sun just to get tanned. They always warned how damaging the sun could be on your skin, and it was not logical to purposely expose yourself to be stylish. I went ahead and removed my make up to ensure that I had no intention of trying to get a tan, and I even put on my sun hat. In belief that the sun was hard on the skin, I did take the necessary precautions and put on my sunscreen as well.I bounced out of my room and went to the kitchen to check out of the window to see if my father was making his rounds. I was disappointed to see that he was not out there
yet. He generally came home from work at lunch to check on the garden. I could not resist the chance to see if Danica had made her rounds outside to her swimming pool. The outside life was quiet, Danica was not out either. I went to the family room where I knew my mother would be relaxing before the start of her day began. She was watching t.v. and still sipping on her coffee. She looked me over when I approached her."I thought you would be painting your face with make up after you lit up like a Christmas Tree earlier." she said looking back at the t.v.
"I thought I would save it for when I really want to wear it. No sense in wasting it." I said smiling.
"Besides, I thought that I would help Dad in the garden since it is getting to be the end of the summer. I saw he has not made it home for lunch yet." I said casually.
"Daisy, it is still breakfast time in some households. You must think its lunch time because you fell asleep so early last night." she giggled.
"I suppose. Is there anything I could do to help dad before he gets here to surprise him? I kinda really want to get some fresh vegetables for a salad later as well." I said not to seem eager to get out in the sun.
"I am not sure of your fathers routine. I do remember him saying he needed to check for bugs and rodents that try to get nibbles on his veggies." she said smirking.
"Well I can manage that at least. I can also see if there is anything ripe enough to pick." I said smiling.
"You better not this time Daisy. Your father is fussy about his garden and has down his own routines and rituals. Just take the duster and shoo away the bugs and make sure Bugs Bunny isn't trying to steal the carrots." she said smiling at her own pun. I smiled back.
I hurried along finding the duster and did check for what I promised to. I then found an old tarp in my fathers shed and laid it down behind the tall corn. I was sure I could get ten mintes on each side without being caught. I got situated on the tarp and allowed my body to absorb some sun. It felt wonderful. Not too hot out, and not a lot of dew on the ground. I began thinking about what I was going to be like on the first day of school. I imagined myself being the main attraction. People just stopping and staring at me. I was all smiles and strutting tall and proud through the halls. Everyone was wanting to know who I was, and If I was new in town. All the popular girls would be dazzled by me, and cling to me the way they did Danica. Then reality sought back in. Danica would be sure to reveal to everyone that I was trying to be someone that I am not. She would do it simply to embarrass me and because she would feel intimidated that she was not receiving all of the attention she was so accustomed to getting. How can I handle this? I could not allow her to get the best of me. However, I was terrible at making come backs. I always walked away from her smirks and rude words. It did say in the bible to love thy neighbor and always keep your enemies close. I would simply kill her with kindness. I think I could handle that. I would make her feel really awkward and not let her know that she crawled under my skin.
Time had gotten away from me, and I had managed to lay twenty minutes on one side. I quickly turned over on my stomach. I had to quit worrying so much. I was giving her an advantage just wasting my thoughts on her. I would accept nice people into my life, I could manage to find people that was more acceptable to normal people such as myself. I had a few aquaintances already. I would find more quiet people that had my same interests. Question is what are my interests? I had never really picked up any fun habits. I could join some clubs and explore my talents. I could maybe sign up for the business club. I could use the knowledge on down the road. Or maybe I could join the Christian Athletes. I knew the Bible very well and that would be a well rounded group that would be most understanding of me. I may find a real true friend that would want to get to know the real me, and hang out together like Danica and her friends did.
I continued to think positive thoughts. I heard my fathers truck pull in. I really had lost track of time thinking about how much my life was going to change for the better. I stumbled to my feet in a rush, and quickly put away my fathers tarp. I emerged from behind the corn stalks, and saw my father entering the house. I didn't appear sunburned but my skin was hot to the touch. I was sure to have some funny tan lines. I did pull my skirt to my upper thighs to get a high tan anyways. If I had managed to get a sunburn. I was very thirsty. I went on in the house.
My father was sitting at the table biting into a thick sandwich. I poured myself some ice tea and sat beside him.
"I hear you are trying to rob me of my vegetables?" he asked in between bites. I giggled.
.""I am anxious for a garden salad." I answered.
"Not happening just yet young lady. I still have much to do before you go plucking." he stated while chewing. I finished my tea in what seemed to be one big gulp. I was parched.
"Well I dusted them for bugs anyways and got a sneak preview of what my future salad will look like." I said snearing and got up. I went to the bathroom and looked to see if I had any sign of sun burn. I looked normal. The sun had drained me. I decided I would change and lay down for a little while. I took a nap and reimagined my life as the princess of the school.
