I managed to toss the salad all together and began peeling the small potatoes. I was on the last potato when my refreshed mother reappeared in the kitchen. She looked amazing. She had on her dress pants, a pink, silk button up shirt. She had a white and matching pink scarf resting on her bosom. She wore her hair up in a gold butterfly clip. She finished her look with a pair of brown, small heel shoes. She smelled of honey suckles even through the cooking dinner.
She immediately went to chopping celery and carrots to add to the pot roast. She smiled at me when I finished rinsing the potatoes.
"You are going to be too tired for this date." She laughed. I nodded in agreement.
"Do you mind to put some macaroni on to boil? I am thinking about macaroni and tomatoes as a added side." My mother asked while adding the carrots, potatoes, and celery to the pot roast.
"Yes ma'am." I answered politely. We was going to eat well.
While we waited for the dishes to finish preparing we sat and talked about how close the first day of school was, and my mother discussed some things she and Aunt Trudy was planning to do. I mentioned my idea of sprucing up my room a little. She thought it was ok, but she would run it by my father for the final say so.
I finished up the macaroni and tomato dish and allowed it to simmer while we waited for the roast to cook. It was almost time for my father to arrive home for work, so we sat in the family room and watched mom's talk shows. We had about an hour left before my mother would check the roast and prepare some cornbread.
We was kicked back and relaxed when my father arrived at home. We got up and greeted him.
"It smells like Thanksgiving in here. Mmmm mmmm." he moaned mimicking Andy Griffith.
"I had better get cleaned up before Daisy's guest arrives." He stated and went peeking in the oven and pots. He started digging for a spoon to taste test, and mom cleared her throat and pointed out of the kitchen. My father put his head down in disappointment and made his way down the hall and into their bedroom.
My mother started preparing the cornbread, and checked on the wonderful smelling roast. She also put on her garden green beans with bacon and potatoes blended in. After all of that had been prepared she started chopping bananas for some banana pudding. I was going to have some major working out to do once my sun burn went in, because I was going to feast on all of this food.
While everything prepared we sat at the bar and sipped some sweet tea. My father finally came back into the kitchen all cleaned up and smelling nice. He had put on his khakis, a blue button up, and slip on dress shoes.
I went to the cupboards to get out our nice dinner plates and silverware for table setting. As I was placing them on the table, the phone started ringing. I started fearing the worst, that it was Tristen canceling our dinner date. My father answered, and handed me the receiver after saying hello.
"Hi sweetheart!" Tristen said happily.
"I don't mean to interrupt you, but my mom insisted I call and ask if I needed to bring anything?" He asked politely.
"No, just need you and your appetite." I teased.
"Ok. Just making sure. I am ready to start my road trip. I should be there right on time. I have looked forward to this all day." He spoke happily.
"I can't wait to see you again. If you have any trouble finding us, just let me know." I spoke softly into the phone.
"I have my GPS set just for added directions. Well I won't keep you. and I am anxious to see your beautiful eyes. So see you soon sweetheart." He replied also in a soft voice.
Ok. Have a safe trip and see you soon." I replied and hung up the phone. My butterflies was going wild in my stomach. My parents was both staring at me with smiles. I was getting very nervous.
I finished the table setting, although I was in another world. We all come together to finish all of the preparations.
Within a hour our table was filled with a smorgasbord of food. Fresh baked bread, cornbread, a tossed salad with multiple dressings, a roast with potatoes, carrots, and celery, garden green beans with bacon and potatoes, and macaroni with tomatoes. My mother had the banana pudding in the refrigerator.
All that was left to do was greet the guest of honor. I think we was all anticipating his arrival.
