Dom's P.O.V
For two days, I was forced to stand by and watch my mate die. By some miracle, her wolf and human spirits settled, and she has spent the last week in and out of a dreamscape. Kiya insists that, when she sleeps, she sees visions of her brother, held captive by The Others. She's been healing slowly and getting her strength back, enough so that she can sit up and converse even if she tires easily.
When she sleeps, even covered in angry bruises, she is so beautiful. I never imagined a fear so strong could take me the way it did when the doctors explained she was In War, an infamous occurrence that acts as a horror story to werewolves and a death-sentence to pup she-wolves who experience it. It has the same reputation in the wolf community as Cancer does to humans only, this is entirely incurable and almost entirely inescapable for she-wolf pups. I suppose, cheesy as it sounds, I never really considered what would happen if Kiya left us after our one month trial was up until I was truly faced with losing her. I also realized that I don't want her to change, not one bit. I want her just as she is, even when she wakes up after nearly two days of battling a fatal affliction and her first words are 'Sweet Hairy Monkey Balls." It's just one of those things, like wearing her earrings in wolf form, that make her distinctly Kiya. And after nearly a week of resting and worrying for her brother, I really miss my sarcastic mate.
Kiya is absolutely insistent that she saw her brother, Khalil, at the door to Hells Spice and, for some reason, it sent her wolf and human into a mad spiral. Now, every time she sleeps, she claims his soul is sending her visions of blood and pain and magic and she is absolutely convinced that he is being held captive, probably being tortured and experimented on by The Others.
When we're a species of monsters, you might think we don't have monsters in our own fairy tales, but we do, and they are much more vicious and bloodthirsty than any monster in a human fairytale. Our monsters are The Others, a clan of some sort made up of power hungry hybrids. Over the course of centuries, there have been very few accounts of the others wandering outside the mountain range they've claimed as their territory but, when they do, they leave death and destruction in their wake. The last time The Others emerged, they killed off almost half of the Blood Moon Pack when I was a toddler. Some pack members, like Khalil, simply disappeared. It's a well-known rumor that the others, being hybrids, cannot reproduce. There are other supernaturals beyond werewolves, although we have a fairly limited contact with them. Centuries ago, the supernaturals decided we like the world the way it is, so we pretty much leave each other alone since the alternative is a territorial war that, considering our respective abilities and affinities, could potentially destroy the world.
Occasionally, there are problems, but we usually allow individuals to sort out their own problems where other supernaturals are concerned. It's a complicated alliance, but that's the general idea of it. Sometimes, these individuals, might get cozy and have kids of their own, hybrids. Now, if you consider it, werewolves are considered supernatural but all the magic in our blood is concentrated on maintaining a harmony between the wolf and human spirits that make up our souls. And both of those spirits are earthly creatures yet, many wolves do not survive their first contact with their wolf spirit, their first shift. Imagine the havoc two supernatural spirits could cause in a body? Two spirits, two supernatural identities, were never meant to share a body as they do in hybrids, and it can sometimes send them mad. They're dangerous and powerful and, for some reason, hybrids cannot reproduce. So, we believe that they have been abducting other supernaturals for two possible reasons, to experiment on them to try to obtain more power or, to breed with them to add to their dying ranks (After all, if the werewolves are a dying breed because we struggle to reproduce, that would make The Others well on the path to extermination if they can't reproduce at all).
