There was a moment of stillness. A pregnant silence descending over us like a heavy fog. Just one moment when we were all frozen in time. I knew it. I saw the blood, saw the body, felt my own heart beating stronger and faster and yet, nothing happened. No one moved, no one breathed. I was fully aware of it, fully aware that I was witnessing the final moments of a friend's life, fully aware that this was a moment suspended in time.
But, time waits for no man. Or Wolf.
Ty was the first to move. Lurching up from under me, throwing himself at the door and slamming it closed, locked in a white room with a dead body.
His eyes travel over me to Dom, never once glancing at his friend.
I have no words, and they don't seem to need them. Dom stands in one long movement and strides over to his brother, standing on the opposite side of their fallen friend. I can't look at Hunter, can't think about the shape of his muscled back facing up, his face, pushed into the carpet. Dom grabs Ty by the back of the neck, pulling his face to his, resting his forehead against his brother's. They are still, like statues, unmoving in a hurricane. Then, as one, they pull back, Opening their eyes to meet each other's gaze. Slowly, sounds are returning to me. The sound of my own breathing the foremost among them.
Ty turns to me, "Kiya..."
I shake my head, pushing to my feet. I meet both of their eyes, my intentions clear as I push past them and out the door of the den. I march to our room, ignoring the blood trail left by Hunter, the proof that his final moments were spent to find us, to warn us. I hear nothing but my own breathing and the distant footfalls of the twins as they follow me into our room. I don't know if this is because there is nothing to hear, or because I seem to have lost that ability to my shock.
When I emerge from our room, dressed in the first pair of old work jeans and a gray t-shirt that my hands made contact with, I know it was the latter. Cass appears to my right, walking away from the Den. Her posture is stiff, her lower lip trembling, the first signs of weakness I have ever seen in her. Behind her is Al, looking just as broken, if not more so, by the murder of his friend.
I stand aside, feeling as though I am intruding on something when the twins meet their fellow Zeta's in the corridor. Dom looks to them, standing tall beside his brother, both of them looking every part the warriors I know they are in the face of Hunters' death.
Cass swallows thickly, then looks up to meet their gazes, "They're here for the Witch. Contained to the grounds and lowest levels. The second floor is as secure as possible, servant entrances included, but only by virtue of quarantine. No one can get in or out beside us."
Dom nods, "Kiya, I know you but...stay here." I grunt, recognizing the alpha command.
With that, he stalks forward, Ty hot on his heels. I don't object, can hardly move with the full force of my mate's alpha command ringing through my head. I'm frozen in shock at Cass's words. Processing. When the full meaning of her words sinks in, I gasp.
The others have infiltrated the territory, the reserve, pack house.
The Epsilon (Army) has managed to contain the fighting to outside and the ground level, making the second or above a safe haven for the pack members who can't fight.
