“Um… I-I’m looking for Ai-Aiden,” I stuttered. “Is h-he home?”

Still smiling, looking me up and down he told me he was. “Why do you come in and I’ll get him for you?”

“I think it’s best if he comes out to talk to me,” I said regaining my composure. There was no way I was walking into the home of a drunk who was looking at me like I was tonight’s dinner. I knew from what Aiden had told me that his father liked younger girls, which was his answer for not bringing home any girls. I didn’t see Aiden’s truck rolling up in the driveway, because I was too busy listening to this drunk man try and convince me his son was home and to come inside the house. I finally realized that Aiden was there when he came up and stood next to me looking ashamed. I didn’t know whether the shame was for his father’s behavior, who was still trying to convince me to come in since he hadn’t realized Aiden was there, or for what he had done. We stood there listening to his father slur for only God know how long before Aiden grabbed my hand and pulled me to his truck. His poor father was still talking to me, even though I was no longer there, when we pulled out of the driveway and sped away.

“What are you doing coming to my house like that when you know how my dad is,” he asked sounding a bit angry at me.

“I had to talk to you,” I whispered.

“And you couldn’t just call me?!”

“I needed to see you too.”

“Case, you put yourself in a bad position going over to my house. Don’t you ever do that again, understand?”

I knew he was looking out for me so I nodded my head like he expected. We rode in silence until we got to my house, where he jumped out of his truck and waited for me to follow him. He was really upset with me if he didn’t even come and try to help me out, which didn’t make any sense because I was supposed to be mad at him, not the other way around. This was definitely a backwards situation. I got out of the truck slowly and walked into my house, Aiden following close behind. He flopped down on the couch without saying a word to me and sighed.

“What do you need Case?”

“What do I need?! I need the sweet guy that left me that voicemail! Not some jerk that’s going to get mad at the fact that I went to his house to talk to him! What is your problem?!”

“You put yourself in a bad position and you’re getting mad at me for being upset, yet you’re asking what my problem is? This is so messed up,” he mumbled. “I’m just concerned is all. When I pulled up my father was trying to get you inside my house. Do you understand what was going on?”

“Yes I do, and I wouldn’t have gone in.”
