The War

Star's POV

"Let's go!"

"Woah, Star, are you sure? What if they see us?"

"Don't worry, I was raised to be a Mewnian ninja!"

I then stepped out of the room and bumped into one of my guards.

"...or not. RUN!" I yelled, and all of us ran.

"Where to, Your Highness?"

"BOB! Stay in the room and don't tell my mom about this!"

"Whatever you say, Princess."

"That guy stays weird," Marco said.

We ran down the stairs. "Here, guys. The library. Always empty. Let's go!"

I closed the door behind me.

"What do we do here?" Jackie asked.

"We sit and think about what to do next."

"Sweet! Books!" Alfonzo exclaimed.

Everybody started looking around and reading excerpts of the books.

"Wow, Star, this is your entire family history!" Starfan13 was holding a big book.

"What? Gimme that. Where'd you get it?" Starfan13 pointed to a shelf titled 'The Butterfly family history'. With next to it a tapestry of the Butterfly family tree. "Weird, I never noticed that before."

"Star, go to your mom's chapter," Marco suggested. I nodded.

"...and a war had broken out between monster species and Mewmans. Princess Moon led the battle against her immortal former friend, and with the darkest of  spells, his middlest finger was destroyed. He then fled to never be seen again."

"Whaaaat?"

"Wait, 'her immortal former friend'? Mom had a monster friend? I wonder who it is."

"It's Toffee, ya dummy!" Pony Head said.

"Oh. OOOH. I see. Yeah, that does make much more sense."

"But who really IS Toffee?" Marco asked.

"Marco, what do you mean, he's Toffee. Our enemy. Get your head outta that hoodie!"

"No, I mean, where did he come from? Who are his parents? Stuff like that."

"Well, I don't think Toffee has a chapter in this book, turd," Pony said.

"Oh, but I can search for his name."

"What? This book has a search option??"

"Yeah. It's a magic book. Duh," I said. "Book, search for 'Toffee'."

"Searching for Toffee," the book said. "Toffee was found on pages 122 and 237."

"Thanks, book! Okay, 122, 122... 122!"
I gasped.

"What is it, Star?" Marco asked.

"It's in Eclipsa's chapter..."

"Go on, read it."

"Eclipsa, Queen of Darkness was wed to prince Rodrick of Mewni, but rejected him for a monster named Mornfang. Together they both fled away and were expelled from the land. From them descended a truly powerful immortal monster. And his name was Toffee the Peacebringer."

"PEACEBRINGER?? How can--"

"Sssht, Marco, don't interrupt!" Starfan13 said. "Proceed, Star."

"How did she even become dark?" Jackie asked.

"Yes. Yes, Jackie, great question!" Star exclaimed and went back a few pages. "Here it is. It says, "When Princess Eclipsa saw the cruelty between the monsters and the Mewmans. Hatred, anger, and sadness came upon her. Everywhere she went she spread darkness. Her wand's magic turned unstable and she destroyed everything in her path. Until this day, nobody's been sure of if her actions had been intentional or not. Lonely she was, rejected on both sides of the spectrum, which fueled the dark. When the dark had taken over, there was no way back. She was trapped."

"Guys, don't ignore the peacebringer-part! How could he be a peacebringer?? Am I seriously the only one who wants to know?" Marco insisted.

"Book, why is Toffee a peacebringer?"

The book automatically turned its pages up to page 237, then highlighted a few sentences.

"At the age of 14, Princess Moon befriended a monster named Toffee. Their friendship brought peace between both their kinds. But once word got out that Toffee was former Queen of Darkness' son, the Mewmans (the Butterfly family above all) started mistrusting him and his kind, which caused the monsters to develop a hatred for them. A war broke out and meanwhile, Moon and Toffee had long before grown apart, despite trying to resist the hatred, they had both given in. And both had lost."

I gasped, "But then that means that... I'm related to Toffee."

"Man, I wouldn't have ever guessed," Marco said.

"So this is all 'good guys gone bad', I guess," Jackie said.

I stayed silent. This could've been me. I could've given in to the dark. I could've let all my anger, hatred, fear, jealousy, and sadness take over, but I didn't. Still, that doesn't mean it couldn't happen in the future.

"Star? Are you okay? You seem zoned out," Marco said.

"What? No, yeah, I'm fine. It's just that I'm a little overwhelmed."

"Then you should go sit down. Allow me," Tom said and magically made a pink couch appear.

"Seriously, Tom? There's plenty of furniture here but you decide to poof something new into existence."

"Of course! Only the best for Star!"

I was not mad at him for this, not even too annoyed. Tom was really doing his best for me. I appreciate that, but I'm not in love with him anymore. And I can't date a person just because I feel sorry for them or because they've really shown me their love if I don't feel the same way. Unfortunately, this also works from Marco's perspective.
I lied down.

"Anything else you want? Water? Chocolate?"

"No, Tom, I'm good. Thanks, though."

"Dudes! I found an interesting book," Jackie said.

"What is it?" Marco asked.

"I don't know, the cover is blank."

"You know that there's also text inside the book, right?" He said playfully.

Jackie laughed, "Yeah, of course I do, you idiot. I'll read it. 'Every wand bearer comes with a companion.'"

Everone waited. "Wait, that's it?"

"Yeah, the rest of the pages are blank."

"What does that sentence mean?"

"Ooh! Ooh! I know! Choose me!" Starfan13 exclaimed.

"Well, what does it mean?"

"It means that--"

Star cut her off, "...Every queen in the Butterfly family had a companion. A friend, a lover, a  pet, a person to fight monsters with. And Marco's mine."

"Yeah, that's it, Marco's hers!" Starfan13 repeated me, probably meaning something different. Marco and I exchanged a look.

"But then Toffee has to be your mom's, right?" He asked.

"Yeah. Until the war. The war... Mom told me we had both won and lost the war that day. But we hadn't lost the war. She had lost her friend, Toffee. She had lost a piece of herself. And she lost the battle going on inside of her."
