After getting away from our pursuers and traveling a good distance, Gabriel suggested we take a break. We had ended up in a clearing on the outer edge of a forest like landscape.
"We should get a little rest. Wounded's other base should be around here."
With a confused look, I asked, "How do you know where their main base is? "
Gabriel grins mischievously. "Well, I am a spy. I have to know ways to get this kind of information, and I just happened to-"
I repress a shiver and interrupt him. "Never mind. I don't want to know."
Shontelle voluntarily shivers, but not from Gabriel's comment. "I'm glad we had changed into warmer clothes before we left Fiera's house. It's freezing out here."
Gabriel responds, "We could make a small fire to keep warm. This kind of reminds me of when I was a boy scout."
Ignoring the last comment, Josh volunteered. "I'll go get some wood."
Without hearing any objections, he turns towards the forest. When he did, I noticed how pale he was.
I turn to the left of me to see if Fiera had noticed. Unexpectedly, she looked spacy, like she was in her own world. She obviously didn't notice that her brother was sickly looking. What is the matter with these two?
In a rush, Malea followed Josh, evidently noticing what I had noticed. "I'll go with him."
Gabriel shouted to them, "Be careful. We are close to the base, so keep an eye out."
After the two went in, Shontelle surprisingly said, "Alright, then Tony and I will go this way to look for wood."
Based on his reaction, Tony was quite shocked by his sudden attention from Shontelle. She grabbed his sleeve and started to head to the right of where Malea and Josh had headed into the forest.
Sounding a little irritated, Gabriel called after them, "But we only need two people to find wood."
Gabriel was ignored, but he quickly brushed it off. He looked to Fiera and I. "Well, could you two help me-"
Interrupting Gabriel, Fiera turned to me, saying, "We need to talk."
Taking the initiative, she walked off to the left part of the forest. I looked at the flabbergasted Gabriel, who was gapping like a fish.
For once, I was the one apologizing. "Um... Sorry. Don't know what's gotten into everybody."
With that, I rushed after Fiera.
Gabriel
I watched as all the youngsters left, pairing into one male and one female. With a sigh, I thought, well that's youth for you. I imagine the only thing that was on my mind at their age was girls, too. That's when I noticed the kid named Kyler was still standing there with me.
Trying to break the awkward silence, I said, "Looks like it's just you and I."
Expressionless, Kyler responded, "I got to go take a pee."
Again, I watched as the youngster walked off. This is my only thought.
I really need to find a wife.
