The following week, chaos ensued, and not the type Uta tended to revel in. An incident happened with Tsukiyama where he tried to eat Kaneki while Kaneki ate Nishiki's girlfriend, Kimi. You had never met her, but you knew Nishiki well from his trips into HySy and you were mad he never mentioned his human lover, also the fact that she knew he was a ghoul.
Nishiki was working at Anteiku and Kimi started going in when she didn't have classes. You were taking your first trip there since the incident and hoped you would run into her to possibly become friends but mostly to get to know her. It was getting late with the darkening sky, but you were holding out hope she would show.
You sat on a stool with a coffee and sketchbook as you passed the time drawing the customers and staff. Uta was working through the day and you were out buying more materials for the masks at the shop before stopping for a drink.
"Hi, (Y/N)," Kaneki said from the other side of the counter. "Another cup?"
"Sure," you replied. "Where's Touka?"
"Still in her room, unfortunately," he answered sadly, pouring more coffee.
You heard the door to the cafe open and turned instinctively to see who it was, and to your delight, it was Kimi. You were nervous about going to talk to her, but you wanted to get to know her because Nishiki spoke relatively highly of her when you inquired his opinion earlier.
Speaking of, Nishiki appeared and escorted her to a table as he showed his gentlemanly nature solely for her. You gathered your belongings and anxiously walked over to them with a friendly smile.
"Hey, Nishiki. Introduce me?" you said.
Nishiki gave you a bored look, contrasting from the adoring one he directed toward Kimi moments ago.
"This is (Y/N)--who I was telling you about," he said. "This is my girlfriend, Kimi, but you know that."
"Of course," you responded. "It's nice to meet you. Mind if I sit?"
"Not at all," Kimi replied jovially.
You climbed on the stool and set your bags on the side of it to lean against the chair. Nishiki went to get your orders and you were going to put forth the effort of beginning the conversation, but Kimi beat you to it.
"You're Uta's human girlfriend?" she questioned quietly, although there weren't many customers in the shop.
"Yeah." You chuckled. "I suppose Nishiki has told you about him as well?"
"Yeah, I've seen a picture of him too." You swore you saw her shiver in fear. "He looks scary. Nishiki said he's really powerful."
"He is," you confirmed, "but he's not scary at all. On the contrary, he's kind to humans and ghouls alike. Don't let appearances fool you."
Kimi nodded and asked, "Why is it that you're human and all the ghouls are okay with your relationship and seem to really like you?"
You leaned forward. "Uta is extremely respected in the ghoul community while also being extremely powerful. Although they basically have to be okay with who he chooses to be with, if they weren't, they wouldn't be able to defeat him in retaliation," you explained.
"Why isn't it that way with Nishiki?"
"Well, he's a lower ranking ghoul and not very strong compared--"
"Are you bashing my status?" Nishiki growled lowly, putting the drinks on the table.
You shrank back in your seat at his voice. "Sorry, Nishiki. It's the truth."
"No, it's not," he scoffed. "You're such a human, you know that? If you weren't with Uta, I would--"
"You would what?"
The entire shop filled with only the staff at that point excluding you and Kimi went dead silent. Everyone saw Uta behind Nishiki at the same time and you were solely unafraid of the dangerous aura he presented as he waited for Nishiki to finish his sentence.
"I-I," Nishiki fumbled after he pivoted around to face the slightly taller man.
Uta wasn't wearing his sunglasses since Anteiku was empty and humans were void from the shadowy streets. With his kakugan on display, it made him that much more overbearing to the room.
"Please, don't make threats toward her, Nishiki. It wouldn't do you any good," Uta said, walking around him to stand next to you.
Kimi looked to be frozen in shock and weary of his every move even after you assured he meant no real harm.
"I was handling it, Uta," you told him.
Uta rested an arm on the back of your chair. "I know, but a helping hand is always needed."
"Okay, but I just got done telling Kimi here that you're not as terrifying as you appear, but I think you disproved my point."
Uta shifted his gaze to Kimi and her breath audibly hitched in her throat. Nishiki moved to stand behind her and tried to look as intimidating but failed.
"It's a pleasure, Kimi. I've heard many things," Uta said.
"Hey," she replied stiffly.
You peered around the shop and noticed everyone besides Yoshimura was affected by Uta's presence. It continued to baffle you because you had never perceived Uta as anything other than sweet and gentle besides when he fought other ghouls or Doves.
"He's not scary. I don't know what your guys' problems are," you said loud enough for everyone to hear.
"I'm frightened to those who are ignorant, that's all, darling," Uta said.
You grabbed your bags and got down from the stool, waving goodbye to everyone as you exited the coffee shop with your boyfriend. You went to go toward the main street, but Uta tugged you down the alleyway.
"Taking the express home," he clarified when you gave him a look of confusion.
You grinned as he crouched down with his back to you and you locked your arms under his arm and around his shoulder. Uta gripped your legs that you looped around his waist and pushed off the ground to soar in the air.
You enjoyed the wind pushing your hair back as Uta skillfully jogged across rooftops and jumped to others. Getting to see the city from that view was one of the perks of dating a ghoul as a human along with countless more. The only bad part was that you didn't know who was watching.
