Uta ran over and caught you before you face-planted on the carpet.

"(Y/N)?" he said frantically, cautiously flipping you over to lay your back on the floor.

He noticed your closed eyes and realized that you fainted. He took note of your behavior these past weeks, but wrongly thought you were catching a cold. Uta put his hand on your forehead, feeling the sudden hotness of it and it fueled his suspicions, but a cold wouldn't do that to you. Whatever it was, it was far more serious.

Uta picked you up and went over his options. He could take you to the hospital, but then he would be found to be an obvious ghoul and be turned in to the CCG. He would have to leave you and that was something he couldn't bear, and he knew you would be furious. There was only one thing to do: go to the sole place that helped those in need.

Anteiku.

It was late, thankfully, so flying through the air over the ward in the dark wasn't completely unsafe for a ghoul. The cafe would be closed, but Uta knew of the back entrance where he immediately headed.

He burst through the door, craddling you to himself, and darted upstairs to the cafe. Uta was relieved to see Yoshimura still awake and sipping on a cup of coffee while reading a book. Yoshimura looked up, perplexed at the sight of his friends in such states.

"There's something wrong," Uta explained quickly. "She fainted and is burning up and was mumbling before passing. Please, help."

Yoshimura got up and made it to you and Uta. He examined you for a few seconds before deciding on what he could do. He was an expert in just about every field of work and life, so medical training happened somewhere during his long journey.

"Take her to the spare bedroom; I'll get what I need."

Uta nodded and hurried upstairs. The commotion caused the others to rustle from their slumbers and peek out their doors to see Uta rushing you to the spare room. He put you on the mattress and brushed the hair away from your face, telling himself you would be fine.

Yoshimura entered the room with two bags of supplies. He pushed Uta away gently and got to work putting up an IV and injecting a needle into your arm. Uta watched every move Yoshimura made until Touka and Kaya appeared in the doorway next to him.

"What happened?" Touka asked, hints of concern in her tone.

"We don't know yet," Yoshimura answered after noticing Uta wasn't going to say a word. Or so he thought.

"Leave," Uta told Touka and Kaya monotonously. "Please."

Kaya patted Uta's shoulder before taking Touka downstairs to get coffee and call Itori and Renji. Words didn't need to be exchanged to know Uta was on edge and saying or doing the wrong thing would set him off like a bomb.

Yoshimura asked Uta question after question about your symptoms and behavior as well as taking your vitals. You looked so... dead that it made Uta unnerved. He needed some air to clear his head, but there was no way he was going to leave you in that state.

Uta couldn't live without you, so whatever was happening, he would make damn sure you pulled through it. He expected the worst, but wouldn't try to prepare himself for it because thinking about it was far too painful already.

He was alone, only with friends as a kid. Uta ran with the wrong crowd and was renowned for being a top ghoul in the community, yet you, a human girl, was what was tearing him to pieces. He took lives for fun once, but your life was the one he put a protective barrier around since you met and he'd be damned if it was broken.

It all made the tattoo around his neck ironic--I can neither with you nor without you, regarding the relationship between humans and ghouls. You were a human and he lived with you (metaphorically and literally) without problem, yet he couldn't live without you anymore. There was still so much you had to do together like travel and get married, but time was running thin.

"Uta, go get something for yourself to drink. You're looking paler than usual," Yoshimura commanded as he timed your pulse.

"No," Uta said sternly. He couldn't leave. Not for a moment. He wouldn't even take his eyes off your form.

"I have to take blood and test it. You won't like seeing it," Yoshimura stated. "Go, or you can find someone else to help you."

Uta froze and narrowed his eyes at Yoshimura regarding his threat, but he knew the old man years to know he probably wasn't kidding, so Uta left the room, but only went to sit on the staircase. He had his head in his hands as he tried to process what happened instead of trying to sift through his racing thoughts.

Ten minutes flew by before Yoshimura exited the room. Uta stood and met him in the hallway where it was clear by Yoshimura's expression that the news wasn't good. Uta was attempting to get the jumbled emotions together to be ready for whatever was coming, but nothing could have prepared him for the results.

Yoshimura sighed and said grimly, "I know what's wrong with her."
