WARNINGS: If you're attached to Bucky like me, you're gonna cry, probably. Also, Civil War spoilers, just in case you haven't seen Civil War yet.
NOTES: Hey, guys! First off, I'm so sorry I haven't been updating. There's a bunch of stuff going on right now, and I just haven't found the time. But, hey, I'm here now! I should mention, this story takes place a few months before the events of civil war. Hopefully you enjoy this! Also, it's pretty sappy, so sorry about that. I like fluffy things, ok?
You looked over at the man standing all alone on the corner of the street. You'd seen him around the place a few times, but he always seemed... distant. He was always by himself, and he always wore the same clothes which lead you to believe that he didn't have a slot of money. The guy just looked like he needed a friend.
You quickly looked both directions before dashing to the other side of the street. You slowly approached the stranger, careful not to sneak up on him. Reaching the street corner, you stood next to him.
"Uh, hi." You said, now beginning to regret this. The man turned and looked at you, giving you a little smile.
"Hey." He said in a smooth voice. Oh, wow. You'd seen this guy, but not up close and dang, was he good looking.
"I, uh..." You began, "Well, I've seen you around and you looked sort of lonely. I thought you needed a friend."
The stranger laughed, causing your heart to beat a bit faster.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"(Y/N)." You replied, "And yours?"
"Bucky." The stranger said.
"Well, Bucky," You said, "Would you like to get some coffee with me?"
---Many little dates had been shared between you and Bucky.
You enjoyed his company, and he seemed to enjoy yours. He even felt comfortable enough with you to take you back to his apartment.
You and him walked up the many flights of stairs up to his apartment, laughing together as you went. Your shoes made light thumping noises as you climbed up, lightly gripping the cold, metal railing to keep balance. Your knees started to ache as you went up further, before coming to a halt.
Bucky gestured for you to follow him by looking behind him and jerking his head towards a door. It was one just at the top of the stairs. Bucky stood in front of it, and waited for you to catch up.
"Well, this is it." He said, in what almost seemed like a shy tone. You looked at the door.
It was nothing but a thin sheet of light colored wood, barely hanging onto its hinges. The golden doorknob looked loose and crooked. You looked back at Bucky who was now staring at his feet.
"Ok, aren't you going to let me in, or are we just going to stare at the door?" You asked, jokingly trying to lighten the atmosphere a little bit.
Bucky laughed, reaching into the pocket of his jeans to pull out the tiny key that unlocked the door. He forcefully jammed the key into the keyhole of the doorknob, jiggling it around a bit before a little 'click' was heard.
He turned the knob, opening the creaking door, and holding it open for you to go in. You thanked him, walking in to the darkened apartment. Bucky walked in behind you, shutting the door and flipping on the light switch.
The dim light revealed the blood red colored walls. You turned the corner of the small corridor to see an old mattress laying in the middle of the floor, a small bedside table on the right hand side.
You turned to look at the kitchen. Only a few bowls, spoons, plates, forks and knives were set out on the semi filthy countertop. The rusting faucet dripped, each drop of water hitting the sink echoed slightly. Newspapers were taped up against the windows, blocking out the sun.
You looked to Bucky, who had moved over to his matress.
"I know it's not much." He said, sitting down on the mattress, "But it's what I got for now. At this point, I'd be lucky if I could even get a place on the street."
You slowly walked over to him, gently sitting down next to him. You gently patted his shoulder in a sympathetic way. Bucky then turned to look at you, his expression one of dead seriousness.
"(Y/N), can I tell you something?" He asked. You nodded, gesturing for him to go on. Bucky took a deep breath and shifted himself on the mattress so his body was facing you.
"Just..." He said quietly, "Just please don't think less of me, or be scared, ok?"
You nodded, a bit frightened but curious. Bucky looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath, before looking down at his hands. He slowly began to take off the thin black glove on his left hand. A glint of metal caught your eye as he continued to take the glove off, eventually revealing his entire hand to be made of a shining silver metal.
You gasped slightly, now knowing exactly who Bucky really was. Bucky looked up at you with his sad blue eyes, his hair falling in his face, waiting for your reaction. When he didn't get one, he sighed and turned around to face the kitchen.
"I understand if you don't want to see me again." Bucky said, his voice saddening with each word, "Most people would."
A wave of sympathy crashed over you as you looked at his face, staring sadly at the floor. You felt your heart break for him. Clearly he was a changed man from what he was.
Bucky Barnes deserved more.
You gently wrapped your arms around him, and held him close to me. Bucky tensed for a few seconds, before melting into your touch. You felt him shift to return the hug, his strong gently pressing you against him.
"You're not going to leave?" He asked, still tightly holding onto you. You pulled away and gave him a small grin, gently touching his cheek.
"Wouldn't dream of it." You said. Bucky smiled, tears beginning to fall in his eyes. You laughed a little and wiped them away, feeling yourself tearing up.
"Hey, don't you dare cry." You laughed, sniffling a bit, "If you cry, I'll cry."
Bucky laughed as well, rubbing his eyes with his right arm.
"If you ever need anything, come to me." You said, "I'll always be here for you."
"I'll help you rebuild your life."
