"Hello, Steve." You said to your boyfriend of two year. Steve looked up at you and smiled. You couldn't help but smile back at him.

It had been... Interesting lately, with Steve becoming Captain America and all. Everything was different, yet nothing had changed. He was taller than you now, and much more muscular. Not like you didn't love the old Steve.

You clenched and unclenched your hands into fists, nervously. Steve was about to go on a big mission, and you were afraid he might not come back from this one.

Steve noticed that you were on edge, and gave you a sympathetic smile.

"(Y/N), I'll be fine." He assured. He hesitated a bit on the last part, exposing the possibility that he wouldn't be fine. He sighed and hugged you delicately, as if he was scared of breaking you.

You allowed a tear to roll down your cheek as you wrapped your arms around him, holding on as long as possible.

Oh, how you wished that this war would end. You wanted to go home and start a family with Steve. Settle down, away from the stress of the war.

Bucky came into the room, standing by the door and letting you and Steve have a moment.

"I have to go now." Steve whispered into your ear, "I love you so much. Never forget that."

"Come home, please, Steve." You said, straining your eyes from allowing the tears to spill.

"I will." Steve said. He then released you and handed you something. It was a small package wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string bow.

"Open it if I don't come back, alright?" Steve said. He smiled sadly, then kissed you, trying to make it last as long as he possibly could. Then he turned and left with Bucky, and just like that, was gone.

You weren't sure what to do, so you went to bed, hoping that this was all a bad dream and you'd wake up in Steve's arms.

Hours turned to days. Days turned to weeks. No sign of Steve. You sat in silence as you stared at the slightly blurred picture of you and Steve the first day you met. You smiled fondly at the memory of a skinny Steve Rogers trying his absolute hardest to impress you.

The silence was broken by a knock on your office door. You opened the door to see a very sad looking Peggy Carter, another friend of yours. You furrowed your brows.

"Peggy?" You asked, "What on earth is the matter?"

You gestured for her to have a seat as you did the same. Peggy took a deep, shaky breath before hitting you with the worst news ever.

"(Y/N), I am so, so sorry." She said, "But, Steve..."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"He... He didn't make it..."

Your heart sank. The news was so shocking you didn't know what to do with yourself. Tears welled up in your eyes, threatening to spill. They stung your eyes like fire.

"Oh." Was all you could muster. Peggy hugged you.

"I'm am truly sorry. He was a good man. I honestly wished he would come back to you." She said. You nodded, and wiped your eyes, trying to keep the year back.

"Thank you, Peggy." You said. Peggy nodded and left.

You cried for the rest of the night. Nothing had ever hurt as much as this. You felt as if a heavy cloud of sorrow and mourning form on your shoulders. Then you remembered the package.

You opened the drawer with a shaking hand, pulling out the small package. You undid the string and slowly unwrapped the paper.

Inside was a picture of Steve, Bucky and you, a ticket stub from the movies and a beautiful ring. Underneath all these things was a note...

Dear (Y/N),
If your reading this, that means that I didn't make it. I know that it might be hard, but be strong for me, alright, beautiful?
Inside this little package, I put a picture of you, me and Buck from the time we went to the amusement park and I got sick. Haha, remember that? I also put the ticket stub from the first time I took you to the movies.
And the ring, it was the ring that I was going to propose with. Your a wonderful girl, (Y/N), and even though I'm gone, I want you to be happy. I love you forever!
Love, Steve

You were in tears, bawling your eyes out. You clutched the note close to your heart.

"I-I love y-you, t-too..." You choked out to yourself.

That was it. He was never coming home...
