Dan stood on the pavement, watching Phil's car grow further and further away, before it rounded a corner and disappeared completely from sight. Dan turned on his heel and took tentative steps towards his flat. He was reluctant to see Cat, of course, things were going to be incredibly awkward. But, Dan believed they could work through their difficulties and restore their friendship to what it was.

He shoved his keys into the lock and twisted the doorknob until it let out a rusty 'click'. The metal was cool against his fingertips, and he gripped it for slightly longer than he needed to before finally swinging the door shut. The silence in the house was heavy. In fact, it was almost suffocating. It was as if someone had left abruptly, and hadn't had time to properly bid the house farewell. The furniture remained still and neatly positioned, and magazine littered the coffee table. But the house felt eerily empty.

Placing his keys and wallet on the breakfast bar and removing his shoes, Dan crept soundlessly towards his bedroom.
'Cat?' he half-whispered into the unsettling silence. After receiving no answer, he concluded that she must be out.
Dan walked slowly towards his bedroom door.

He always left doors open. This was one of the things Dan did that Cat absolutely hated. And yet, Dan was stood in front of a closed door, a door that he had no recollection of shutting. He gripped the doorknob and pushed, jumping slightly when the door creaked in protest. His hand felt wet and when he glanced down at his fingers, he saw that they were now covered in blue paint, as was the handle.

The door swung open to reveal his room in an almost unrecognisable state. His desk had been upturned and now lay awkwardly on the floor, along with his chair which was sprawled helplessly nearby. Clothes were strewn randomly across his unmade bed and socks littered the ground. His window had been thrown open and the curtain billowed menacingly. The most striking of the mess, however, were the ugly blue letters painted across his back wall.

The letters spelled 'HOMO' and drops of paint splattered the floor and the frame of his bed. It was such a twisted sight, one that made Dan's stomach heave and his eyes water. He was so overcome by pain and confusion, that he didn't notice that he still had a vice-like grip on the doorknob, or that his knuckles had gone white. His face shared the same pallor as his hand, and his jaw hung open slightly.

Tears began cascading from Dan's eyes, trailing down his cheeks and splashing onto the floor below. He was frozen in shock at the panorama of mayhem before him. Never had he ever felt so betrayed. He would have much rather had Cat punch him in the jaw or smack his square across the face than this. Physical violence is so much more forgivable, you see. It's an act of furious desperation, or the release of pent-up emotion.

But, Cat took her sweet time. She acted like a reckless typhoon and sent Dan's bedroom into a frenzy. Then, with long, carefully placed brushstrokes, she shattered Dan's heart. All the respect Dan had for Cat as a flatmate, a companion, a friend, had been obliterated. Dan stood in silence while letting the tears flow openly, absently aware of the teardrops splashing at his feet.

Dan pulled his phone from his back pocket and dialled Phil's number. He couldn't stay in the house anymore. The memories that were buried deep in everything from the wallpaper to the couch were resurfacing, screaming at Dan. On the third ring, Phil picked up.

'Hey! Everything alright?' Phil soothing voice rang out, tearing through the deafening silence.
Dan let out strangled sobs, and any hope of comprehensible words escaping his throat was destroyed by the tears that fell consistently.
'Oh my god, Dan? I'm coming over right now. I promise. Hold on.' Phil sounded terrified. His voice shook and Dan could hear the jangle of keys being picked up in the background. This lasted only a few more seconds before the line went dead and Dan sunk helplessly to the floor.
