'Dan, we can talk,'
'Okay,'
'Just tell me how you're feeling,'
'Okay,'
Dan took a deep breath, somewhat ragged and radiating exhaustion from their previous activities. However blissful the 'distraction' was, it only lasted so long. The pleasure acted as a dam, something to merely keep the overpowering rush of water at bay, in no way dissipating the waves. But it helped. It allowed Dan to become more ready and willing to deal with both the pain and the shock of Cat's actions. So he opened the floodgates gently, letting the biting words and harsh slaps seep into his consciousness.

If Cat's words were made of water, they merely lapped at Dan's feet. If her actions were clouds, they slowly drifted into view before gathering in the sky of Dan's mind. Another deep breath, and the young brunette turned to face Phil.
'I loved Cat,' he whispered, but refused to tear his gaze away from the blue eyes he was fixed on.
'She was practically my sister. Of course, we've quarrelled in the past, but it was always stupid things like how much time we spend in the bathroom or leaving dishes on the kitchen counters.'

Their previous arguments came nowhere close to the current one. Dan felt like something had shattered inside him. There was the irreplaceable bond of friendship that he held on tight to, without knowing just how fragile it was. These thoughts were opening Dan's floodgates wider and wider. Soon, the freezing water that had lapped at his feet had made its way up his shins and over his knees. The clouds that gathered slowly in the sky were a large and thundering cluster, every boom stinging Dan like a whip.

To Phil's shock, tears began to well in Dan's eyes once again. The chocolate brown irises were drowning in the younger's pain, and soon tears were spilling and cascading down Dan's flushed cheeks.
'She'll realise how unreasonable she's being soon enough.' Phil said quietly. He reached a hand towards Dan, but when his fingers brushed the brunette's shoulder he winced painfully, and Phil quickly retrieved his outstretched arm.
'Dan,' he began again, 'I'm so sorry,'
Dan nodded in response, too distraught to properly reply. But he tipped himself towards Phil and allowed himself to be wrapped in a comforting pair of arms.

For hours they stayed, wrapped up in one another and breathing each other in. Sleep reached out and took both boys, submerging them in peaceful, dreamless slumbers. Their chests rose and fell as one, and while Dan's eyes lashes tickled his cheeks, Phil's fingers drew circles on Dan's upper arm.
