* His Last 16 *
Chapter 5
We stopped outside Max’s house. He only lived next door to me, so it wasn’t like I had miles to walk. Max cut off the engine to his car and got out of his side, prompting me to open my door and also get out. I walked round to his side and hugged him tightly, loving the feel of my best friend in my arms.
“See you tomorrow Kara” He pulled away from me and smiled, waving as he walked away.
I waved back and began walking over to my house, just ten seconds away. After retrieving my keys from my bag, I unlocked the front door and stepped inside, throwing them down onto the small coffee table which was placed by the door. Throwing my bag on the floor, I heard a shuffle coming from our living room and looked at the door confused. My parents wouldn’t be home for another hour or so?
Quietly, I tiptoed over to the door and slowly opened it, cautious about what I would find. Sat on the plush white sofa, was Henry, who twisted his head to face the door when he heard me enter.
“Well hello there Kara, I’ve been expecting you” He told me, starting to stand from my couch.
“Obviously, I live here” I said, rolling my eyes before narrowing them at him. “What are you doing here, and how the hell did you get in my house?”
He chuckled darkly. “Well, Kara, you really need to step up the locks on the windows in this place. Way to easy to break” He smirked. “And isn’t it clear that I came here to talk to you?”
He broke in? Quite sad if you ask me. There was no way I was having him in my house, it was partly to blame and I couldn’t even look at him without distaste covering my face. I swung round to look at him fully, my eyes narrowed and my jaw clenched.
“Get out now Henry.” I said, my voice sounding deadly with the anger I was currently attempting to control.
“Now why would I do that, Kara? I just want to talk to you” His smirk grew wider and he took a step towards me menacingly. This step took me back to that night.
FLASHBACK
I was wondering hopelessly around the house of someone I barely knew, looking for Dakota before realising that she had probably gone outside to find Stacey, Lucas and Dom. Following her supposed footsteps, I made my way out into the cool, crisp October air, my gaze inspecting the garden. I couldn’t see any of my friends, and a confused expression made its way onto my face.
Stepping back over the threshold, I tried to think where else they could be. I looked around for about ten minutes before giving up, wondering upstairs to sit in the TV room I’d seen earlier. The door was slightly open and I wondered why, but decided I didn’t care, so just walked in and sat on the couch. What I didn’t notice was Henry sitting on the chair just a few feet away from me.
“Hey Kara” He said, sounding genuinely kind and polite.
I screamed and jumped up off the couch, holding my hand over my chest to control my terrified breathing. “Jeesh, Henry, you scared the hell out of me!”
“Sorry” He chuckled and came to sit next to me, draping his arm over my shoulder when I sat back down.
Too tired to wonder why he’d placed his arm around me, I leant my head on him and closed my eyes, just trying to satisfy my drying eyes. You see, before everything, Henry and I had been pretty good friends. Not in the bestie kind of way, but we were quite close.
I felt him begin to rub his thumb in a circular motion on my arm, before he moved it further down my body. My body stiffened, not knowing what the hell he was doing. I grabbed his hand and moved it back to my arms, hoping he would be obedient and just leave it there. Unfortunately for me, he didn’t, and moved it back down.
“What are you doing?” I asked, worried about what he was trying.
He didn’t answer me, but instead turned my head towards his and forced his lips upon mine, shocking me for the second time that evening. Pushing him, I tried to get him off me, but he wasn’t having any of it and laid me down, his body on top of mine. I was terrified and didn’t know what to do, so, with my actions being based on my instincts, I kneed him in the place it would hurt him the most.
He groaned loudly and rolled off of me, holding his area to try and block away the pain. I looked into his eyes and saw something that scared me; it looked like determination. I turned and ran out of the room and outside, forgetting about my friends and pulling out my phone, dialling Harry’s number. I didn’t want to ruin everyone else’s fun, so decided to get him to pick me up. He wouldn’t mind.
“Kara?” He sounded concerned as he answered the phone, recognising my number.
“Please can you come and pick me up? Now?” I sniffled into the phone which he must have heard, because he responded telling me he’d be five minutes and cancelled the call.
Hearing his car engine loudly around the corner, I started walking in that direction. I saw his car and started walking towards it, not paying attention to my surroundings.
All I could remember was the sound of him screaming my name and a car hurtling quickly towards me, my eyes widening, and Harry pushing me out of the way of the car. Only for it to hit him instead of me. A piercing scream came from my mouth and I rushed over to him, seeing all the blood. With shaking hands, I pulled out my phone and dialled 999, telling the operator I needed an ambulance. I held his hand while I waited for the ambulance to arrive, and I heard him say “Love you Kara” before he fell unconscious.
END OF FLASHBACK
If Henry hadn’t have tried it on with me, I never would’ve called Harry, and he would never have come to the party to pick me up. I could never forgive him for that.
“I said. Get. Out.” I told him again through clenched teeth, but this only encouraged him.
“Come on Kara, don’t you want to pick up where we left off?” His words hit me like a ton of bricks and my vision blurred, thinking of Harry’s comatose body lying in that hospital bed.
“Get out! Get out now! It’s all your fault! My brother is in hospital fighting for his flipping life because of you and I don’t want you anywhere near me, or my family! So. GET. OUT!” I all but screamed in his face before trying to push him towards the living room door. At that moment, I heard the front door swing open, and saw Max walk in, a look of concern on his face.
“What’s going on?” He looked directly into my eyes before noticing Henry stood close to where he was.
“Please, just get him out of my house” I cried and leapt into his arms, needing his brotherly embrace to comfort me.
“Out Henry” He said in a stern voice, and I heard the front door open and close.
