Chapter 2
I Destroy a School That Wasn't Good To Begin With
We arrived back at Elizabeth a little after school ended, and I invited Brendon and Jake over to my house.
"My father won't care. It's not like you're spending the night," I said, and they nodded. Not like he would've noticed if they did, anyway.
We walked over to my house, and we collapsed on to different chairs.
"Home!" I called and was answered with silence. Blissful.
I shrugged and turned on the TV. I flipped through the channels and finally decided on the movie Pitch Perfect.
"I love this movie," Brendon said and sat closer to the TV. Jake sat by him, and I shook my head.
"Boys," I muttered and set to work on my math homework.
Numbers floated around in my head, and I easily did all the problems in my head. Math has always been the easiest subject for me, though I have no idea why. I'm just naturally smart.
I yawned, a little tired after doing my experiments, and I moved to my history homework. I quickly jotted down the journal entry I was supposed to write, and I got a glass of water.
I instantly felt better as the water hit the back of my throat and energy flooded through me. It's strange what water does to me sometimes. I remembered how the water had responded to my command, and I felt a sudden urge to try it again.
Not with Brendon and Jake around, I told myself. And especially with my dad. He'll do anything to get more money, even sell his own daughter to scientists.
I shook my head and went to do my science homework. I finished it quickly, and I curled up in the armchair by the TV with a book.
"Is that all she does?" Brendon asked, and I ignored him.
"Pretty much," Jake said.
"You know, I wouldn't have to read as much if you two would actually use your brains. They're there for a reason," I said, not looking up from my book.
"Well, you have enough brains for three people," Brendon said.
"Yes, and where will I be with your brain when you're in jail, and I'm in America?" I asked. That left Brendon speechless.
Jake was laughing, and Brendon slapped him. I smiled to myself and went back to my book. I heard birds chirping outside, and I looked out the sliding glass door. I could feel the birds hopping around on the trees and the ground, and I closed my book.
"I'm going outside, you two couch potatoes coming?" I asked, but their eyes were glued to the TV.
"I'll take that as a no," I muttered to myself and walked outside to my backyard.
I began kicking a soccer ball I found, and I soon was hitting it up with my knees and kicking it into goals with professional-soccer player level moves. I heard clapping as I hit the ball high in the air with my knee, did a backflip, and kicked the ball into the goal while in the air.
I turned around and saw Jake watching me and clapping. "Bravo. You're good, but you did the backflip a little early."
I rolled my eyes and put the soccer ball away. "You wouldn't know."
"I have a question for you," he said, laughing slightly.
"And I have an answer," I replied.
"Are you serious about letting Brendon and me come with you to America? You were acting really weird today at the gallery," he asked, and I swallowed a lump in my throat.
