Chapter 7
Fun on the Run
Jake, Brendon, and I all made it to the truck, and I slid in to the passenger's seat. Jake got in the driver's seat, and Brendon climbed into the back seats. Jake stepped on the gas pedal, and we went speeding out of Poseidon's Village.
"Wow. We all reunite with our long-lost fathers and in an hour we have to leave them again. Man, our lives suck," Brendon said.
"Yeah, I know," Jake said. I stared out the window, and Jake nudged me. "Hey, you okay?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just really upset I had to leave my dad again. I haven't seen him for ten years, and we were only together for, like, twelve hours before we had to separate again."
"I know how you feel. My dad just asked me to come and live with him and my mom," Jake said.
"At least your mom and dad are still together. Mine haven't seen each other in ten years. I thought my mom had died when I was nine years old, and it turns out she was alive. I haven't seen her since," I said.
"Hey guys, can we get some food? All this depressing talk is making me hungry," Brendon said.
I looked over my shoulder at him. "We just ate."
"So? I'm a growing man, I need food!" he said, and Jake looked back at him.
"Dude, you just hit puberty last year. You're not a man-you haven't even had a chest hair yet," he said, and I giggled.
"Not true! I have one chest hair, and his name is Jeffrey," Brendon said.
"Eew! Dude, TMI!" I said, and we all laughed.
"Okay, enough of my chest hair and let's get back to the food issue," Brendon said.
Jake and I groaned, and we rolled our eyes. "Dude, you'll get food when it's time for lunch," Jake said.
"But you never eat!" Brendon complained.
"He has a point, you are pretty skinny," I said.
Jake shot a glare at me. "Not helping."
"She's right. You are like a stick," Brendon said.
"No, more like a pole," I said.
"Nah, like bacon. Everyone likes bacon," Brendon said.
"Yeah, but nobody likes him," I said, and we both started laughing.
"True that, sista," Brendon said, and we fist-bumped.
"Wow guys," Jake said.
"Aw, come on bro. We're just messing with you," Brendon said.
"Yeah, you're likable. Just not as likable as me," I said, and Brendon laughed.
Jake glared at me, and I held my hands up in surrender. "Kidding!"
Jake rolled his eyes, and I could tell he was trying not to smile. I laughed and looked back out the window.
I was feeling a little better, thanks to Jake and Brendon, but I was still upset about leaving my dad. It's not every day you see your dad after ten years. I sighed inwardly, and Jake pulled in to a gas station.
"We're running low on gas," he explained, and I nodded.
We all got out, and Brendon helped Jake put gas in the car. They really should've paid attention during drivers ed.
"I'm gonna go get something to drink," I said, and they nodded.
I walked into the gas station and grabbed three bottles of water. I noticed a book, and I picked it up. It was pretty thick, and I noticed the title was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
