chapter one
Ani POV
"Ani!", I hear my little sister whine.
"What?", I roll over on our terrible excuse of a mattress to face her.
"I had a bad dream", she starts to cry. For an eleven year old, Lily is the strongest girl I know, unless she is scared.
I gently move her chestnut hair out of her face.
"It's okay", I wrap my arms around her and give her a kiss on her forehead. "Do you wanna talk about it?"
She sighs and nods. "Mr. Ralph k-killed you..right in front of me", Lily snuggles closer to me. "I c-can't lose you"
"Shh, I know, I know", I hug her. "I'm never going to leave you, okay? We're going to get out of here, I just haven't figured out yet."
Our parents were the best. Lily and I were their pride and joy. So when our little family were involved in a boating accident that killed our parents, our lives went downhill.
I was a normal thirteen year old. I was obsessed with musicals and Disney. I loved volleyball and my friends. But most of all, I loved music and theatre.
Now, Lily and I have been placed in three different fosters home in the past year. Mr. Ralph and Mrs. Hallie hate us. It's so obvious and it makes my blood boil because I know they just fosters us for our money. They don't even take care of us.
I should be strong. I should just tell someone about them hurting me and my sister, but if I did they would kill us for sure.
Lily yawns and eventually stops crying. "I love you, Ani", she whispers.
"I love you too, Lils", I give her another hug and fall asleep.
When I wake up I let Lily sleep in. It's Saturday, which means Mr. Ralph and Mrs. Hallie have to go to work all day, and we stay home by ourselves. Everyday, I have to rush and make them breakfast, or we get punished.
I decide to make scrambled eggs and toast. I fix a plate and quietly run upstairs.
"Lily", I shake her awake, hanging her the plate of food. "Eat before they wake up-"
"Too late", Mr. Ralph grumbles. Lily's eyes widen and look at him fearfully.
"I'm sorry. It won't happen again, breakfast is already made", I quickly say, yanking back the plate and standing in front of Lily, in case he tries to hurt her.
Mr. Ralph punches me in the eye, which causes me to fall in the bed.
Ouch! My face stings and I feel hot tears welling up.
"I just want a nice Saturday morning- is that too much to ask?", he yells at me. All of a sudden he grabs the plate and throws it at the wall, the food smearing down until it's a little clump on the floor.
"I'm sorry", I cry.
He huffs and walks out of the room, murmuring nonsense words under his breath.
Lily starts to cry. I just sit down on the bed, not knowing what to do.
She gets up and walks over to our bathroom. It doesn't have much in it- toothbrushes, one hair brush, soap, and rags that we use as towels and washcloths. I hear her turn on the sink and a second later she's back with a wet rag.
"Here you go", she hands to me, upset that I am hurt.
"Thank you", I sigh and hold it up to my face. It doesn't help much, but oh well. It'll just be another one of my many bruises.
I hear our two foster parents bicker and the door slam. I'm guessing they went to work.
Trying to cheer me up, Lily grabs my phone and turns on the Hamilton soundtrack. We're kind of obsessed!
"What are we going to do today?", Lily asks as she dances around while we listen to "Non-Stop."
"Umm, actually, I want to sneak out and somehow get us food. We haven't eaten much of anything in the past three days", I give her a mischievous smirk.
"But what if they catch us", Lily asks.
"Well, I know you're hungry and I am too. We can't just stay here and starve. If they find us, then they will probably beat us", I sigh.
"Then let's go, but we need to be careful."
We sneak out the window of our room and start walking in the direction of the city. I have no idea how we're going to get food. We have no money, I hate to beg, and I don't want to steal. It may come to that, though.
"Lily, you need to listen to me. We're going into this store. Act natural, and I'll try to stick a few things in my coat", I whisper and grab her hand. She nods and we walk in.
We walk around, while I scan the aisles for something small, but sustaining.
"I haven't had pop tarts in a long time", Lily sighs as we walk past the snack section.
"Me either. The box is too big to fit under my coat without looking suspicious , sorry", I tell her and see a disappointed look on her face.
In the fruit section, we wait till no one is around and I carefully grab one banana off and stick in my coat. Quickly, we run away and look around some more.
Lily tugs my hand and points to a section with Lunchables. I think about it for a minute, and decide to try and see if I can sneak it out.
When I put it under my coat, I hear a man's voice ask,"What are you doing with that?"
---------------------------------------------
I just got the idea for this story! I know I just started my other Hamilton book, but I'll try to update both soon. Also, sorry if this sucks, I have the flu so I feel like crap and that probably affects my writing :/
