Recap:

I stood up and faced his innocent glory. “What the f*ck is wrong with you?” I poked him hard in the chest with my one free hand while clutching the strap of my bag ferociously.

His eyes reflected confusion and interest while looking down at me with that smirk that I knew all too well. “The question is…” He held wrapped his hand around my wrist to stop me from hurting him and continued with a raised eyebrow, “What are you doing poking a teacher?”

I was about to reply when the Principal called out my name. “Ms. Nickelsen, the kids are looking for you.” I ignored the sparks flowing from my wrist towards the rest of my body.

My head snapped to her direction and saw her looking from me to Garrett with anxiety. “What’s going on here?”

Chapter Five

“I was just...” I stopped and looked at my wrist caught in Garrett’s hand.

“What?” I heard the Principal ask with an impatient voice, seeing her from my peripheral vision crossing her arms and tapping her foot for effect. This reminded me far too much of my younger days. Pssh, as if I haven’t had enough of that for the past week.

I sneaked a glance at Garrett and saw him looking at me as if I was the most interesting thing in the world besides peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The nerve. I tugged my wrist away from him forcefully and gave a hard glare before turning my attention back to Principal Summers. “Mr. Anderson here was distracting me.” I rolled my eyes and added, “Rather intentionally.”

I saw an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher flicker in her eyes before she dropped her arms to her sides and sighed, “Very well Jenny. I’ll leave you two alone.”

Without waiting for a response, she walked to her office quietly-the sound of her heels echoing throughout the corridor.

“Well that was fun.”

I whipped my head to my co-office and gave said with the coldest tone I could ever muster, “Don’t talk to me ever again.”

His eyebrows knitted together, green eyes turned murky with confusion and his thin mouth slightly curled into a frown. Like all the times he did those years ago, he looked devastatingly handsome.

“You’re staring at me,” came out hoarsely from his mouth.

I cleared my throat and looked away quickly. Maybe it would be a good idea if I pretend that didn’t just happen.  Looking down on the floor, I muttered, “Excuse me, I have to go to class.”

I started walking away when I heard him whisper, “Bye Jenny.” My heart increased its pace with my feet. With every step that I took, my heart felt heavier and heavier.

I didn’t understand.

By the time I reached my different office beside the girls’ locker room, my heart felt ready to explode.

A knock from the door distracted me from my wallowing.

Wiping the dry tears from my cheeks, I turned my chair around slowly and cleared my throat. “Come in.”

The door swung open and a girl with shoulder-length, black, curly hair and tanned skin peeked through the doorway. “Um, can I talk to you about something?” Her dark eyes silently hoping for me to say yes.

I gave her a warm smile and signalled for her to go in with my hand.

“Of course, you can talk to me about anything...” She stepped inside with a grateful smile and sat on the small couch gracefully.

I added, “Even though I didn’t take a degree in psychology like the school counsellor.”

She rolled her eyes and chuckled, “Oh yeah I can absolutely talk to the school counsellor about anything.”

I laughed along, “Yeah, Ms. Ferrell’s such a sweetheart.”

Which was a total lie because the school counsellor apparently sucked at doing her job-she was better off a pro wrestler. Now, imagine pouring your heart out to a woman as muscular as The Terminator and her response would either be ‘hmm-mm’ or ‘How do you feel about that?’ Yeah, that’s how enlightening it is to talk to Ms. Ferrell.

“So, what’s your name again?” I asked politely but failing miserably. Teenagers can be very sensitive about how other people talk to them nowadays. Better be careful.

“Sarah,” she grinned and crossed her legs, placing her hands on her lap. She started fidgeting when she noticed that I wasn’t going to talk first.

I slumped back onto my chair and sighed. “Is this about a boy?”

Her smile faltered.  “How’d you-”

“Oh honey, my mind’s still fresh from my high school days so don’t think I don’t know what’s going on with teenagers’ minds.”

She gave me a weak smile.

I decided to give her some time and waited for a whole five minutes until she finally spoke, “I’m dating this guy from a drama club outside school; well I used to date him anyway.” She chuckled sarcastically. “He’s apparently, also the school’s most popular student. Long story short, I caught him cheating on me with my sister last night and...”

Does her story sound familiar or what?

Tears started forming in her eyes and she continued, “And I just found out that I’m pregnant with his baby this morning.” Tears were falling freely from her eyes and I rushed over to where she was. She immediately broke down as soon as my arms went around her for comfort. She reminded me of what could’ve happened if I made the mistake of giving my virginity when I was with Garrett. Actually, she reminded me a lot of the innocent girl who I used to be... “I-I don’t know what to do. My parents don’t know what happened and my...my so-called sister k-keeps on giving me these looks... I thought-I thought...”She sobbed harder and clutched the back of my shirt.

I rubbed her back soothingly and whispered, “Sshh. Time will pass and scars will heal.” And for me, I needed a lot of time because even after almost four years, the wounds were still raw from heartbreak. But Sarah was pregnant.  She had it worse. “How old are you again?”

She took a deep breath and answered shakily, “Eighteen.”

I smiled, thankful that she was of age. “You know that you can move out of your home now right?” I leaned back to look at her.

She nodded slowly. “Y-yeah...”

I grinned. “What do you say? Move in with me until we can figure this out?”

Her eyes went wide. “Are y-you serious?”

“Of course I’m serious. You can be the little sister I never had,” I said and smiled softly.

She engulfed me in a bone crushing hug. “Oh my God thank you so much,” she replied crying from what I’m guessing was pure relief.

I can make things right through Sarah.

I will surely not mess this up.

Not this time.
