Too Young
Chapter 6
Benjamin:
I was so glad when lunch came. I just hoped I could find an empty table so I could eat by myself. That is until Jennifer saw me. She still looked so pretty. She had beautiful brown eyes and hair to match. She came up to me. "Hey, Ben. Do you want to sit with me?"
I had to say that I was surprised at her question. I figured that she would have a lot of friends and sat with them. But then again, I thought maybe her friends didn't have the same lunch period as her. "Sure."
We sat down at an empty table after she went through the lunch line. I then noticed Amy. She herself was going between tables. It took everything in me not to get up and find out what was going on. Jennifer started snickering at me. "Is that your sister?"
"Yes. How did you know?"
"Because I've never seen her here, either. And you also seem worried. Are you guys close?"
"Yes."
"Here I go with all of my questions again. But what grade is Amy in?"
"She is a freshman."
Jennifer smiled at me. "Well, I'm sure that Amy will make a lot of friends here."
I was quiet for a moment after that. "It's not that easy for either of us to make friends. It never has been. We've always moved constantly. So Amy and I haven't been able to make friends that easily. When you have a parent whose job moves constantly it's hard to make friends."
"Oh, I'm so sorry. Just tell me to shut up."
"That's OK. You didn't know."
Then I noticed two girls approaching our table. They were the two girls that were talking to my sister when she was sitting with them. They both had huge smiles on their faces. "Do you know these girls?"
Jennifer laughed. "No. They are freshmen, though. I probably know what they want, though."
Before I could ask her what that might be the girls introduced themselves to me as Amber and Ashley. I wasn't paying much attention to them so I didn't catch either of their last names. Amber wanted me to go out with her. She told me that I was just playing hard to get and that she always gets her way. That nobody says no to her. "Amber gave Jennifer a death glare. "Is there a problem, Amber," I asked. It took everything in me not to laugh.
"Are you saying no to me because of Jennifer here? She's a looser. You need to come out with me. I'll show you a great time. I promise."
"I'm so, so, so sorry, Amber. I can't break my plans for Friday night."
"So you are going out with her?"
Jennifer smiled at her. "Yes, he is. I'm so excited. This looser finally has a date on a Friday night."
Both Amber and Ashley stormed back to their table, where I saw Amy and another girl. I couldn't wait to see what Amy would tell me later. But just when they got back to their table Amy and the other girl went to sit with two other kids. I was just glad that those girls were gone. And I couldn't believe what came out of my mouth next. "That was good, Jennifer. Can I hold true to my word?"
We agreed to go to a movie that Friday night. I couldn't believe that I was letting a girl get to me. But I thought if anything Mom and Peter would be happy about it. I just hoped that Amy had some luck in the friendship department, too.
