Too Young

Chapter 14

Matthew:
That Monday morning my dad came in to check on me before he left for work, thinking, of course, that I would be well cared for, because the night before was awful for me. My dad was up all night with me. I felt horrible that I kept him up when he had to work. I knew my being sick wasn't my fault, but it still made me feel bad. "Hey, Matt."
     "Hey, Dad."
"I want you to try and eat something today. Is that clear?"
I had to say that I would, even though I knew very well that Carolynn wouldn't let me have anything, especially after what had happened when Amy brought me the soup that weekend. But what could I do?
A few minutes after my dad left for work Carolynn came into my room and told me that I needed to get up for school. "Get up, Matthew. You're going to school. And, just so you are aware, if I hear from your school to come and get you it won't be good for you, my dear. I have things to do today and I can't be taking care of you."
I couldn't stay silent at that point. Because, even though I hated being around her I was really sick. And, I knew that it was going to take every bit of energy I had to get through the day. My doctor had already told us that I needed to get as much rest as I could when I was sick from chemo. "I won't bother you, I promise. Just let me stay home. Please? I won't ask you for anything. I just want to go back to sleep."
She came over to my bed and pulled the covers off of me. "You are going to school. You have no choice. Now, get the hell up."
When I started to gstand, I felt like I was going to throw up. I ran to the bathroom and did exactly that. Even though I felt like I was going to get sick again not even five minutes later, I was able to get ready for school.
I went downstairs about a half an hour later. I saw Brandon sitting at the table eating breakfast. I knew there was no way that I could eat anything. So I decided that I at least needed to drink one of the nutrition drinks my doctor recommended. I didn't even want that. But, if she was forcing me to go to school, I had to try. I just had to do it without her knowing that I got one because I know I wouldn't have been allowed to have that, either, for fear that I could get sick from trying to drink it. But, no such luck. The bitch caught me. "I don't think so. You should no better, Matthew. You will be punished when you get home from school. Do you hear me. I told you that I am not going to be happy if I have to ruin my day because of you. If I could leave you at school when you were sick, I wouldn't care what you did this morning. But if you don't come home today you can drink one of those when you get home from school."
I didn't have the energy to argue with her. I decided to put the drink back because she was right. I didn't know if drinking that would make me sick. And, I couldn't get sick. "Okay. Sorry. I won't eat anything." I was trying to get out of whatever punishment that would be coming my way when I got home from school. "Can I just go?" I was then trying to get out of the house as fast as I could.
"Get to school. And, depending on how my day goes, I won't punish you for that little stunt that you just tried to pull."
For some reason, I believed her. So, I began praying that her day went as she expected as soon as she told me that she might not punish me. But, as soon as I got outside, I felt like I was going to get sick, once again. I ran back into the house and through up. I thanked God that I made it back outside for the bus.
When I looked for Hannah I saw her with Amy. That was what I really wanted. The last thing that I wanted was for her to give me a lecture about the fact that I should be at home when I'm sick. "We don't need a repeat of last time, do we?" I could just hear her. But, Amy spotted me.
