Too Young

Chapter 15

Amy:
As Hannah and I were talking on the bus, I couldn't believe who I saw. So, when she stopped talking about the project that she and Matt did for the Science Fare I brought the fact that Matt was there to her attention. As soon as Hannah saw Matt she looked both upset and worried. "Are you coming with me," she asked me as soon as we got off the bus. "We have a few minutes before we have to get to class and I can tell you are worried about him, too."
I followed quickly behind her. He looked so sick. Just as sick as over the weekend, in fact. So, I knew that he shouldn't be there at all. Hannah was the first to speak, which I figured she wanted. And, I was still trying to get to know both of them. I didn't want to say the wrong thing to either of them. "Matthew."
He ignored Hannah at first. The whole hallway I'm sure heard her, so I know Matt had to have heard her. Hannah was getting stares from everyone in the hallway. She walked up to Matt and whispered something his ear. Matt didn't look very pleased with her after she came back to where I was standing. I honestly thought that she would try to get him to come over with her for a few minutes. She looked angry when she came back. I couldn't help but ask. "Hannah? What happened?"
Hannah started to walk away from me. So, I decided to let her try and cool off and maybe she'd talk to me later. I went up to Matt and asked him what had happened. "Hey, Matt. How are you feeling?"
"Fine. Sorry, Amy. I gotta get to class."
     "Fine. We'll talk later."
My morning classes seemed to drag on forever. I needed to talk to my friends and see what happened. When lunch approached I found Hannah at our table. But, Matt was at an empty table, not eating anything. "Hey. What happened between you and Matt this morning, Hannah?"
A tear fell from Hannah's eye. She tried to wipe it away before I saw. "Matt and I aren't friends anymore."
I was utterly shocked at what Hannah was telling me. "That can't be true. What happened?"
"Matt told me that we were no longer friends because of the way I treat him."
Hannah jumpers up and ran out of the cafeteria. I ran after her. She ran into the girl's bathroom. "Matt said I treated him like a child. I shouldn't bring him breakfast and lunch anymore. That he doesn't want me in his life. That my being in his life has made his life worse."
Hannah was on a roll. I knew that I shouldn't do it, but being me, I couldn't help myself. I just had to ask. But, I wasn't at all expecting the answer that I was going to get. "He said I made his punishments from Carolynn worse."
I was in too deep. I had to keep asking. "What kind of punishments?"
"Carolynn abuses him. Physically and verbally."
I began to feel sick. I couldn't believe Hannah had just told me that. Although, I thought for sure that she would regret telling me later. I knew that Hannah and Matt had been friends for years. "You guys will talk things over. Everything will be alright, Hannah. Has Matt told anyone that Carolynn abuses him?"
Hannah looked at me like she did or said something wrong. "No. and, Amy, you have to keep quiet about it. Matt can't know that I told you about any of it."
I didn't know what to say. How was I supposed to keep something like that to myself. I couldn't. Even if I lost them as friends, Matt just couldn't keep being abused by his stepmother. That wasn't right. I just hoped with my telling the school that he would forgive Hannah. She was just extremely worried about him.
