Chapter Three

TONY

I approached the small girl sat alone on a swing clutching a stuffed panda. She was cute with her obvious obsession with pandas right down to her panda slipper boots and oversized knitted cardigan with pandas sewn onto the pockets. Lily looked up and shrinks back on the swing clutching her toy.

"Hi, Lily."

I crouch down in front of her and she waves timidly.

"What's your name? Are you going to hurt me?"

I shake my head, "I'm Tony but my friends call me turtle because I love turtles. The girls inside are too fake."

Lily giggles before slapping her hand over her mouth, she really did believe the whole speak and you'll be punished.

"It's okay to speak Lily, I bet you have a beautiful voice."

She shakes her head, "I wouldn't know Tony because I don't speak often. Can you push me and panda?"

"I would love to push you two."

I get up and Lily smiles as I stand behind her and start to push her. She giggles and it's the sweetest sound known to man.

"Higher Tony, I've never been pushed on a swing before."

My heartstrings tug. How could Lily never have been pushed on a swing before? Then I remembered her past and got sad.

"Tony are you okay? Did I make you upset?"

Lily tugs on my trousers and it's only then I realise that I'd stopped pushing her and now she was stood in front of me with her lip trembling.

"I'm not upset Lily, you could never make me upset."

I crouch down and brush her fringe off her face. She stares at me before reaching her hands up to touch my face.

"Then turn that frown upside down."

She puts her fingers on the corners of my lips and pushes my frown into a smile.

MIKE

"Then turn that frown upside down."

Lily's voice was kind of squeaky as she uses her fingers to turn Tony's frown into a smile. I can't help but awe at how good Tony was with her and how quickly Lily was warming up to him.

She looks up and stares directly at me before shrinking behind Tony using her panda toy to hide. Tony looks over his shoulder and smiles at me before motioning for me to get down to her height to make her feel safe.

"It's okay Lily, this is Mike and he's my boyfriend and in the same band as me."

I crouch down as Lily pops her head around the panda and Tony's legs, her green eyes glancing up at Tony before locking eyes with me. She shuffles towards me and extends one hand while the other one clutches her toy.

"Hi Mike I'm Lily, and this is panda. Do you want to play with us?"

I shake her hand hearing Tony awe behind her. "Nice to meet you Miss Lily and Mr Panda I'd love to play with you guys, what do you want to play?"

Lily steps back and taps her chin before pointing towards the seesaw, "can we go on that Mike?"

I nod and she squeals before running towards it. I stand back up as does Tony who I pull into a hug and peck his lips.

"You're really good with her Tony, I guess you're both kind of shy but bring out the best in each other."

Tony blushes and pecks my lips again, "I guess I just want her to see that there are good people who won't hurt or judge her."

I watch my boyfriend walk towards Lily and sits opposite her. Lily goes up in the air and starts to laugh. Tony made a good point, I mean Danielle and that girl Summer were mocking Lily for her awful past whereas Tony was doing a nice thing by playing with her. I didn't want him to get too attached though because after today we probably wouldn't see her again.

"Mike come and sit on my side please."

Lily's voice cuts through my thoughts and I smirk at the scene in front of me. Because Tony was bigger than Lily she was stuck in the air while Tony looked smug with himself.

"Let's take Tony down Lily."

Tony grins and lowers Lily down so that I can sit behind her. And this time around it's Tony who gets stuck in the air pouting and swinging his legs like a child while I high-five Lily. Okay, now I could see why Tony was getting attached to her.

"Okay, guys let me down now."

"Not until I capture this moment on film. The great Tony Perry took down by Mike Fuentes and a four-year-old on a seesaw."

Jaime appears out of nowhere holding his phone up. Lily buries her face into my chest, I guess because she didn't know Jaime she thought he was bad. I stroke her back.

"Lily this is Jaime a friend of mine and Tony's. He can be a little loud sometimes but he's also a joker and a big kid."

Lily pulls back from my chest, "if you say so, Mike. Can he play with us?"

Both Lily and I glance at Jaime who smiles like an idiot and runs over to Lily before scooping her up in his arms.

"What do you say to pairing up Lily against these two?"

Lily yells and throws her arms around Jaime's neck to keep herself from falling. I see Tony eyeing them with concern, Tony was being a mother. Jaime tickles Lily who squirms and giggles.

"Vic and Danielle should adopt you, Lily. I don't like any of the girls inside."

Jaime pokes Lily's nose and she tries to grab his hand. I let poor Tony down and he playfully glares at me before turning to face Jaime and clears his throat.

"Have they picked one?"

"Some blonde called Summer."

I tense up, that was the girl who was cruel about Lily. God help Vic, but I had a feeling Danielle was more for the picking.

"What can you tell us about her Lily?"

Tony tickles Lily's belly while she was still in Jaime's arms.

"Summer is mean and a bully and you should all run away and never look back."

I wanted to laugh at Lily's answer but the kid looked dead serious. Tony and Jaime wear similar expressions. Lily squirms in Jaime's arms and he puts her back down before she tags him and runs off.

"Did I just get tagged?"

"I think so Jaime, run Tony."

Tony doesn't hear me in time and gets tagged by Jaime who then runs off to find Lily. Tony grins in my direction and I raise my hands in surrender.

"Don't even think about it turtle."

"Revenge for the seesaw Mike. Run giraffe run."

I yelp and start running while Tony chases after me. I find Jaime hiding on the climbing frame with Lily sat on the slide. They both laugh at me as my boyfriend chases after me. I wasn't going to forget this day.

LILY

I made three new friends today, even though our encounter was brief I felt at ease around them. Tony was the nicest, Jaime was loud, and Mike tried to keep the other two under control. Vic was Mike's older brother and he and Danielle adopted Summer. I wanted Tony or Mike to be my new daddy, but they weren't ready to adopt.

As I crawl into bed clutching panda to my chest I feel relaxed for the first time in a very long time. Summer was gone and the other bullies were lost without their leader. Maybe my life would be easier in here now.
