It had been days since the mermaids arrival. All the student body was buzzing about it all. My supposed 'soulmate' had been trying to see me but I would walk away like a coward. I could not face him yet and I would not face him.
Abigail mentioned that William would be coming and I had been waiting for the day. He had not come and claimed the ring yet and so I wore it still. Always and I held it close to my heart. William would call everything off, I had a feeling.
I had tried to see a vision of my future but it was all blurry. William must still be making his decision and that made me more nervous. As much as the Queen's Guard tried to help, they could not see it either. So, it was the waiting game.
For the time being, I studied the scrolls that Aeslin and I did. It was all I could do to take my mind off William. At this very moment, we were in the library of the Queen's Chambers. All the council were here reading books on war strategies since we were all quite young still. The lives of the Kingdom of Pangaea were in the hands of inexperienced young adults and Ambrogio. I was incredibly worried.
Though I trusted them all with my life it was the lives of my people I was now trusting them with. It was difficult to wrap my head around. But it was the decision I made and the decision I was happy with. They all the best interest of the kingdom at heart and that is what I wanted.
"There are old world tactics in this book." Robin sat down beside Aeslin.
Aeslin looked over it and shook his head. "You are dealing with witches. With one spell they can destroy you."
"Then what do you suppose green skin?" Tristan asked shutting the book in his hands.
"A white flag." Aeslin stated and laid on his back.
"Surrender?" Gardenia asked.
"Yes. We will never defeat the witches. Not after what the mad king did to the witch. He burnt decapitated his head and then burnt him in a public arena. The witches will never side with Gwendolyn. Ever again." Aeslin explained.
I shut my book and swung my legs back over the arm rests, to the ground as I had been laying across a seat before. "That is it!" I squealed and everyone turned to me. "This is all because the mad King killed an innocent witch!"
"Yes!" Chamania joined in. "If we find the truth to the killing, we could possibly sway the witches to our side!"
I nodded eagerly. "Exactly!"
"How will we do that exactly?" Conri asked. "It is not as if we can ask the mad king, himself."
"No." Ambrogio grinned. "But we have a young Queen who has premonitions."
I paled almost as much as Ambrogio.
"No. The Queen is still learning about her visions. Bringing up a premonition is much more difficult. It hurts her and drains her energy." Ceslav growled at Ambrogio.
"A weak Queen is a weak Kingdom." Gardenia whispered and I turned my head towards her. "It was what my father always says. Sorry."
I shook my head. "Do not apologise." I gave her a small smile. "Mayhap it is time for supper. We are all weary and hungry." I grinned at Conri and Robin.
We all shut our books and walked over to the mess hall for supper. On our way we spoke quietly of more war tactics, but none of them seemed appropriate.
"Perhaps if we all call our councils?" Conri asked. "I shall make a call to the werewolf council and see if they could be of some assistance."
"I'll call the faerie council." Gardenia nodded.
"The same with the vampire Council." Ambrogio nodded. "It may take some nights but it is better than nothing."
"Your Grace!" Someone called out.
We all stopped and were faced with Prince Sultan who was making his way towards me. Tristan stepped in front of me and I let him cover me so I could cower behind him. Yes I know, I am weak. But it is, how it is.
Prince Sultan stood right in front of the entire group, looking quite hurt. "Your grace, may I have a word. Privately?"
If I didn't pay him any attention the least I could do was talk to him. He deserved that. All my council were staring at me and waiting for my order. I took a deep breath and nodded, slowly. They wandered off towards the mess hall and I told there awkwardly with Sultan.
"Your highness, if I have offended you in anyway, please know I apologise." I mumbled.
He was staring at my neck. The necklace was still on my neck as I was still wearing it. Since the moment he put it on around my neck I had not taken it off. It was beautiful.
"You still wear the necklace." He whispered.
I nodded. "If you like, I can take it off." I raised my arms and he stopped me. "If it rude to continue wearing it, I would hate to -"
"No." He whispered. "It is yours. I gave it to you and you were meant to wear it."
I gulped and stood frozen. "H-how are you so calm? This necklace shows we are soulmates and yet I feel nothing for you. Are you not hurt?"
"Yes I am hurt. Quite hurt. But there is nothing I can do about it. All I can do is make you fall in love with me." He gave me a lopsided smile.
I shook my head and took a step back. "No, no you cannot make me fall in love with you because I am in love with another. Prince Sultan, I am promised." I raised my left hand up to show him. "It is as good as an engagement."
He furrowed his brows. "Who dares proposes to the soulmate of the future King of Mermaids?"
"I dare." A new voice growled.
I turned around and found William standing in the doorway looking completely drenched. It must've been raining outside. He had ridden in the rain to see me. To break off any contact between himself and me. "William." I breathed out.
"Who are you?" Sultan growled, his fists tightening and releasing.
"My name is William Montreal and I am her betrothed." He answered and came to stand by my side. "My best guess is that you are Prince Sultan of the fish."
"William!" I shrieked.
The next thing I knew Sultan was charging towards him with a fist in the air. He punched right in the jaw and sent William flying.
"Sultan!" I screamed and hurried to William's side, immediately checking if he was alright. "William, my love?" I whispered.
He slowly opened his eyes and looked to me, looking dazed and confused.
"It's okay my love, stay there. I'll get the healers." I took deep breaths and looked to my queen's guard who had now taken a protective stance around us and facing Sultan. "Armani grab the healers, please." She nodded to me and left.
I turned my attention to Sultan. "William is my betrothed, how dare you lay a finger on him." I growled from where I knelt with William's head on my lap. "As Queen I could command death on your head."
"And you would wage war on mermaids, when you already have a Revolution on your hands?" He smirked.
I stared at William, his eyes once again shut. It made my heart break that he was this ill. Mermaids had an inhuman strength, since they were always swimming. "Burnhan call for Gardenia, please! She must have something to heal him."
He nodded and sprinted for Burnhan.
"No, but I would reject you as a partner." I grumbled.
"I am a mermaid not a werewolf!" He chuckled. "I apologise for hitting your betrothed but you know as much as I do that I am your soulmate. We saw the necklace glow. How can you explain that?"
I snapped up. "How can you explain that I am also a wolves mate? Not just one, but two."
He stepped back, completely shocked. No Pangaean had ever been a wolf's mate, nor a mermaids. This was all new territory for everyone. It had come as a shock and we were all still wrapping our heads around it as well.
"Your grace!" Gardenia was running towards us. Behind her were the rest of the council as well. They watched as the scene played out.
I ripped my eyes away from him and to Gardenia, who had bent down on the other side of him. "Please heal him."
She nodded. "I'll try my best."
