Lying there, in a doorway of an abandoned building, I heard life pass me by. I don’t remember how I got here, how long I had been lying here for or when I would move again; the only thing I remembered was walking away from the fire and then finally collapsing from exhaustion in this dingy doorway. I wasn’t asleep even though my eyes were closed; every now and then I would drift out of consciousness but I tried to avoid this as every time my mind would let go, I would be found and haunted by the dead eyes of my Master. The same pair of eyes that I had avoided looking into for the last 6years.

People walked by me but they continued to walk, not paying attention to me, not caring. Cars would pass by but they would drive on, not seeing me, not caring. I didn’t know what day it was, what time, what month or what date, I no longer cared.

Weakness had overcome me and now covered me like a heavy weight blanket; my bones had become so weak I couldn’t stand, my skin looked shallow with no colour. I had become thin from my lack of food; my strength had left me. I found the noise peaceful in a way, the birds, the cars and people’s footsteps. If I concentrated on them I could keep my mind from envisioning the things I wished most not to see.

An hour, day or month could have past just now but I paid no attention. Instead I found myself concentrating on the footsteps of passers by. Sometimes when I felt giving up would be the best thing a small voice would whisper ‘Stay stronger’ and my determination would return.

“Robyn?” a long since heard, familiar woman’s voice called. My ears pricked as I heard heeled footsteps coming towards me but I kept my eyes closed, too tired to open them. It was probably just a woman talking to her friend. No one would know who I was and it seemed most unlikely that anyone would recognize me.

“Robyn, sweetie, is that you?” the pair of footsteps grew louder as they approached, when I heard them stop, I felt a warm hand touch my cheek while the other checked for a pulse. “Oh my! We'd better get you out of the cold” I heard an alarmed voice say.

Gently grabbing my hand someone pulled it around their neck, another arm wound around my waist pulling me upright; I wanted to thank this person but my voice would have failed me. Following the orders of my exhaustion, blackness took over my consciousness not long after being pulled up right. Blackness my old friend!
