As the sun came up for the next day, I walked to the clinic to check on Luke. I hadn't known Luke very long nor did I know much about him, but he meant a lot to Will, Harry, and pretty much everyone else in camp. So I knew I was able to trust him.
With a container of fresh veggies from last night's dinner, I walked into the clinic and saw Luke still sleeping. Harry and Kelsey were curled up together on the seat where Harry sat last night and I felt a deep surge of jealousy soar through me. Before I could get too mad, I remembered that I did in fact reject him... Of course he would go back to someone that wanted to be with him when I had clearly stated to him I didn't want him. It was only fair, but that didn't make it hurt any less.
Luke stirred as I sat at the end of his bed and gave me a small grin acknowledging my presence.
"I brought you some food," I scooted closer to his torso and opened the container of vegetables.
"Mmm smells nice," he mumbled and I smiled lifting the spoon from the container helping him feed himself. I placed the spoon at his lips and he opened his mouth to let the veggies fall in. He chewed, swallowed, and opened for the next bite creating a cycle until there weren't any left.
"Thank you," he mumbled again and reached his left hand to touch my arm, but he didn't have a left hand anymore. I frowned and gave him a knowing smile with my eyes brimmed with tears.
"Would you like me to go get you anything or?.." I asked fighting my own selfish needs to cry in pity of him.
"Water," he said and I did just that. I brought him water from the sink and placed a straw inside the plastic cup for him.
I stayed there and let him fall back asleep. Peeking back over my shoulder, the two sleeping were still very much asleep. I sighed and walked out of the room to go to the kitchen to start getting breakfast ready for everyone in camp.
People in line were asking me questions about what happened last night and I shrugged not feeling like talking about it. They must have seen the car in the lawn of the town hall and wondered if there was an emergency. Soon enough though, they would realize Luke just needed medical attention because he didn't have a left hand anymore.
"Jane," Ben smiled at me as he came through the line.
"Hey, what's up?" I smiled back and handed him a slice of bread.
"I saw Harry leave the gate," he said pushing the fluffy carbs into his mouth.
"Was he with Leslie or Will?" I frowned and stared out the windows of the cafeteria sitting area that once served as a restaurant.
"No, by himself," Ben was telling me this because he too knew the rules of camp. No one was allowed to leave camp unaccompanied. Not even the leader.
"Shit," I cursed and dropped the loaf of bread onto the ground. I ran past Ben and past the rest of the townies to get out the door. My feet brought me to the gun locker and I grabbed two guns and a big knife.
I went to where I escaped over the ledge one time and did the same thing. My feet landed on the dirt and I heard Will from the scaffolding look out scream my name.
